Males and females, cockerels and pullets are easy to distinguish. The males (true bred) carry two barring genes which makes the barring brighter to the eye. The females appear darker, but should still be barred crisply.

The males alone display secondary sex characteristics such as combs and wattles at a pre-puberty stage.
