Worst prolapse I’ve ever seen. Please let me know advice and whether this is curable. Ive read lots of info and tips but I haven’t seen a prolapse as bad as hers before. She’s a beautiful Orpington but I also don’t want her to be going through this for the sake of “trying” and “crossing fingers”. She’s in a lot of stress and I can’t help but relate this to my own childbirth which in all honesty is terrifyingly close to the same size! She’s been isolated early so no pecking from the flock, she’s clean, I’ve been holding her and “it all” in with Manuka honey and a sugar concoction for the last hour in the dark but she’s all push and it won’t stay in! She’s only just recovered from fly strike so my heart is feeling for her. Suspicions this was caused by her laying her first egg since and it was huge, leaving her with a prolapse. I read steroid free haemorrhoid cream? Any help 🙇‍♀️

You’re doing great, don’t panic. As soon as possible, get her some human calcium citrate plus D3 vitamins. Give her 400-600 mg right into her beak: gently pull her wattles down and pop the pill into her mouth. Keep her somewhere warm, quiet and dark. If the prolapse will not stay in after you’ve tried a few times, it’s probably too swollen to stay in and will have to make its way back in on its own, I wouldn’t try to keep forcing it in anymore. In the meantime, ensure that prolapse tissue is kept moist at all times with something such as honey, a sugar paste or coconut oil. Please be sure she is getting plenty of fluids. It would be good to offer electrolytes in her water for right now.

Here is a really helpful article that may make you feel better by @azygous about prolapses.

Thank you, it actually looks much worse in person than the photo. Will get some calcium citrate. She’s just clearly so distraught with all this :(

I understand :hugs I’m very very sorry your chicken is going through this. She sounds like she’s been through quite a bit lately. You may want to put some towels under her. Do you know when the last time she laid an egg was? Did she completely overcome the fly strike?

So am I, thank you ❤️ and she laid this morning her first egg since before the fly strike and it was biiiig. So I can understand how this happened. She totally overcame fly strike, I had her in a lil chicken hospital and had just put her back with the other girls last Friday and now this :( so she’s back in chicken hospital again.

Poor baby can’t catch a break. I know it looks bad, and I imagine worse in person, but many do recover. Sometimes it takes a few days to a week or more and a lot of dedication. You’re the best judge of her condition. Things like witch hazel and cortisone cream can help with the swelling, so can honey.
