Worst Breeds You've Had

How has now one mentioned Cornish x?! Lay in their own filth, try to consume each other, try to consume me, die suddenly, eat more food than anything I've ever seen, life expectancy of 8 weeks. Give me any healthy chicken breed, with a decent lifespan, reasonable laying, and weight at butcher!

That’s not really a fair comparison in my view. That’s strictly a meat bird. Most people don’t keep them to be “good chickens”.
A birds filth is dependent on the way someone houses and keeps there birds. It’s not the birds fault. I’ve raised them in a chicken tractor and we’re great clean birds.

I was told to keep them inside (due to heat) by the hatchery. My too small to butcher broiler lives with my flock now and is still very odd and lays in any filth she can find . It is a chicken, a Frankenstein's monster, and they make my heart so sad. That is why they are a breed I don't like to keep. I'd imagine I wouldn't like a bird bred strictly for laying either. Quality and quantity of life is important to me for all my animals.
Any breed has angry roos, they don't bother me. They're delicious.

hate meat birds to not worth all the money to feed them for a 4lbs bird after processing and most die before processing so your wasting feed for nothing

My least favorite now are my Wyandottes. They’re mean, bullying jerks. They chase after the Easter eggers and pull their feathers out for no reason. One of the Easter eggers only has a handful of tail feathers left.

If you’d asked me a couple months ago, I would’ve said cuckoo Marans because they’re so delicate health-wise. They’re still not as robust as the Wyandottes, but they’re so mellow, sweet and talkative it more than makes up for it.

So far I don’t hate any of the breeds I’ve had. I will say Cuckoo Marans are the closest I’ve had to dislike. I got 2 marans chicks along with 2 color packs in June. One of the Cuckoo’s was a cannibal. She had crazy eyes too. I tried everything to break the habit but was unsuccessful. We ended up putting her with the grown ups at 4 or 5 weeks and they killed her within the hour. A week later we introduced the other young ones to the flock and they accepted them with no problem.
Crazed Cuckoo’s sister is very fearful of people. She has given me hell when I’ve tried to get her back to the coop. She’s aloof and steers clear of the other hens too. Just a strange breed.

I totally agree! I love the look of the Wayndottes, their lacing is so pretty. I’ve tried to keep them 3 times and all 3 times they quickly became “the mean girls” it was like high school all over and any non-wyandotte were not in the cool club and had to be bullied

I have to completely agree with the Wyandottes. Those are some of the evilest chickens I have met, besides Amberlinks. I heard from people that their temperaments aren’t the best; I didn’t want any but the family over ruled me.
Any sexlinked or production breed we have had have been cruel and wasteful bullies—especially Amberlinks! The only cockerel of the batch of Amberlinks chicks was marked for the stew pot BEFORE he was out of the brooder! Production Plymouth Rocks are there with Amberlinks. I don’t know if the heritage type has the same temperament, but only two live because the freezer is full.

On a different note, our OEGB, Bug (the legless rooster) has been one of the sweetest roosters we have ever had (even before lost his legs), so I’m so sorry to anyone who has trouble with them. Bug’s the five year old goddaughter’s roo for a reason. He’s also amazing to our hens, even if he’s about a quarter of their size.

Unpopular opinion, but like @featheredplanets I am not a fan of silkies. Our previous flock was inherited and the silkies were not suited for the rainy climate of the PNW and always looked liked sad soggy diapers standing in mud. They are also virtually defenseless and have zero survival instinct (from my experience) and not a one died from old age but from predation or stupidity.

There isn't a lot of "Worst Breeds" Threads out there, so i decided make a new one!!

The chicken breed i find to be the worst is the classic White Leghorn. Their attitude, shape, and color i'm all not a fan of. I gave them a chance once, but they didn't stay long.

I love my White Leghorn. She's just the sweetest. She gets dirty quite often but other than that she is by far one of my most favorite chickens. And honestly, I haven't had chickens long enough to say that I don't like a breed.
