I read exhaustively, researched extensively..... Built an awesome coop and got my 8 lovely ladies and ..... I suck!

I went away on a vacation and came back to.... Bumblefoot, mites and today, I found what looks like a roundworm in the run.

What gives?!? My poor girls!!! I'm so careful about looking after them and clean up religiously.... The roost was too high and I've been scrimping on bedding to keep the coop cooler so I get the bumblefoot. I'm treating with triple antibiotic and veterycin , have excised, used ABX and the feet are looming better every say. Lesson learned. Treating the mites with sevin and everyone seemed brighter today and then.... A worm.

So I read and read and understand that if the worms are coming out they are all probably pretty infested.... and ok will get ivermectin tomorrow and treat via the pour on method with the dosage I've been reading about ...

But now I'm having a panic attack because we had been eating their eggs and worms can get in the eggs so I'm really worried I need to get my kids to the doctor and wormed because of this!?!? Should I?

I love my gals so much but feel completely inept! I feel awful and am thinking of just giving up the chickens all together because I'm clearly and unfit chicken parent!

Relax ! I am pretty sure your eggs are fine. I never had to preform surgery on my chickens yet but a lot of members have. Good luck

Get Wazine at the feed store for the worms. Worms very rarely get into eggs. I wouldn't worry about the eggs that you already ate, but hold off on eating them not because of the worms, but because you aren't supposed to eat the eggs after Wazine, Front Line, ect., basically after de-whatevering them. Also, you can see the worms in the eggs:

Don't worry. NONE of what you just described is your fault. If you were an awful chicken parent then your birds would be dead or in tiny cages that they can't move in. If you have any question or concern about something in your egg just post it. Good luck!

Ivermectin is ineffective as a poultry wormer due to overuse of the product, and worms have built resistance to it. Worm all your birds with valbazen cattle/sheep wormer or safeguard liquid goat wormer. Wazine only gets rid of large roundworms. Chickens can be infected with other types of worms. Valbazen or safeguard will take care of them.

Welcome to BYC. There is no reason for you to beat yourself up. Bumblefoot is very hard to prevent especially if you have small rocks and pebbles around as I do in my chicken yard. Most people deworm their chickens twice a year, and if chickens touch the ground they will probably get worms. Dawg53's advice to use Valbazen or SafeGuard (fenbendazole) is very good. Mites are difficult to get rid of, and can easily be brought into a coop by a new chicken or from bales of hay or straw that has been infested. Sevin dust and permethrin dust or spray are very good to use, and the coop eeds to be sprayed and emptied of bedding. Repeat this every 7 days until no mites are seen. This forum is here to get suggestions from others for help, and you seem like you probably are very conscientious about your chickens. Many of us have had similar problems with out chickens.

I seriously doubt if the red spot in your egg is a worm. It is more than likely a 'blood spot', and is absolutely normal.

Thank you Dawg! I am off to tractor supply once my husbands PT is done. Will grab safeguard and likely enact a twice yearly worming schedule. My gals are in an enclosed run, would a ground sprinkle thing be helpful? Read about a powder you sprinkle to kill any lingering eggs in the run?.....

So my kids and I are likely clear?
