I used a plastic travel crate for my last broody silkie and it worked great. I tucked it up under the nest boxes to give her a more protected area to nest in. She was a happy little broody and I didn't have to worry about babies falling out of the nest box.
I use a wire dog kennel when they need to be isolated or I need to bring them in the house to recuperate. If the weather ever gets warmer I'll likely use it as broody jail. It has a wire bottom and I can sit it up on a couple of bread crates to increase air circulation.
My wire kennel is wrapped in 1/2" hardware cloth to keep everybody in and out (as needed).
