Purple...do they look gray to you? They are definitely splash. They started out with just a small amount of splashing but it's become darker...especially the cockerel...since they've gotten older. The pic may be a bit dark...

I always thought that coloring was splash but some silkie experts
told me it's actually gray. I assumed the different shades made them
a splash.

It's now my understanding that a splash is more solid in coloring.

We need a silkie expert here cause I ain't it.

The red in the comb will be darker or redder depending on his hormone level. Sometimes my splash roo's comb wil be bright red and and other times it's the standard mulberry color.

Usually by 8 months, my better quality silkies will not have the pin feathers anymore. I think the better quality the bird is, the longer it takes for them to fill out?

As to the molting, I'd think they are loosing their youngster eathers and getting their adult plumage.

Gray and splash are entirely different; both from a genetics standpoint and from appearance. Splash is a genetic variation of the blue gene: two copies of the blue allele. Also, splash is irregular, random colouring--no two look alike. Splash may have Pg & Ml. The base would usually be e^b, but could be built on just about any base except E^Wh.

Grey has (or should have) two copies ot the not-blue allele. It is a very regular concentric penciling (also referred to from a genetics standpoint as multiple lacing) pattern caused by Pg ml on an e^b base. It cannot carry Ml (that would create a single or double laced bird, not a multiple laced/penciled one). A different E-allele,, with the exception of e+, would significantly alter the pattern; no penciling would be present in the bird.

The splash cockerel is very nice! He looks older than you say he is.

The splash pullet's back is a bit long and her tail isn't held high enough. Her crest is on the small side, but nice & full

I like both white's wings better--held higher and together--you can see edges trailing on both splash.

The white cockerel has the best foot feathering--it is awesome! His comb is too tall, and redder than I prefer, but well within the standard. His crest is a bit flat on top, but the largest & fullest of the four.

Nice birds!

Sonoran...

I thought the splash cockerel looked older too...but I hatched all of them together and these are the only silkies we have.

When do they mature sexually? The boys are crowing but not acting remotely "sexual".
