Would/do you kill a chicken to eat?

So what would you do? I don't raise chickens to eat. I'm not slaughtering my own, I can't do it. The ones that have been butchered to eat should rot in a pile instead of being eaten? What good purpose is that?

To you too.

I didn't mean to be offensive.

I just think that if you are going to eat an animal, you should know that it was treated at least not badly.

No problem dude or dudette ! ? Maybe my original post didn't come through clear from my perspective. (which I do a lot BTW) I know where my meat comes from, unfortunately, and I realize they (animals) do not live a good life at all. But the reality is that is where I buy my chicken and beef, at the grocery store. At this point, I have no choice. But I am raising my own chickens for friendship and eggs and totally delight in their presence.

No! Horrible: I wouldn't know and I hope that our meat had a great life (that sounds a bit wrong.) Unhealthy: No, organic chicken. And organic meat.

All I'm trying to say is it that I think it's our responsibility as meat eaters to KNOW where our food came from.

I agree! Although I don't know EXACTLY where my orgainc poultry is from, I know that they weren't pounded with tons of growth hormone injections their whole short life. As far as the treatment goes, I can't help myself but spare a little less feeling for a creature I never knew. This is why I buy my meat, not kill it. So long as me and my family are eating healthy meat, I'm happy. Does this make sense? I don't want to seem ignorant, but this is strictly my point of view after the upbringing into an animal-loving family. I don't eat my pets, but I do eat birds that are healthy. If they had to be born to provide my family with a meal, I'd much rather know they did so organically.

You know what helps? Talking to them: Man I've a got a Thai curry recipe for you,,, and you; are gonna be in my momma's gravy!

I do it but don't like it (and can't eat chicken for two days after). I'v got to hand it to folks in Asia; you pick the bird in a cage, they pluck it while you chat and then take it home (no refrigeration: what other choice do they have?)

I can barely eat my eggs. I can butcher; son and family eat. And I don't even name my chickens. Ate homegrown chickens as a child all the time. Stupid. But I cannot get my stomach to listen to my brain.

You all might be very surprised to know that the "organic" chicken and beef you buy in the store, while labeled "no hormones" and do not get hormones "injected" (which even commercial growers don't do) into their bodies, are indeed raised inhumanely. The government's definition of organic or cage-free differs from our idea of these terms. While not caged, these birds have very little floor space and do not, typically, free range onto pasture like we imagine.

These chickens are not given hormones but they are fed hormone stimulating soy enzymes, which accelerate their natural hormone production....which still yields a piece of meat with increased hormone levels in the tissues. And this is on your plate.

At least, if you are going to buy organic or free range birds for consumption, visit the local grower and see the establishment. Ask questions. Don't buy the cellophane promises and feed your family the government's answer to the "better foods" craze.

Nope, our chickens/ turkey/peafowl/ ducks are pets and workers around here. They give us eggs, I sell their eggs to help pay for their food, they keep me entertained and add stress relief. Their #1 job is to scratch/break up all the animal poo from - all my other useless animals, LOL. I haven't had to use an Apple Picker in years. That is worth their weight in gold to me!

I am GOING to eat my chickens because I have not touched commercial poultry for two years and will NOT patronize humans that treat critters that way. I often hear from people "well, they're gonna kill them anyways so i don't care how they live". If YOU had an incurable disease and would be gone soon I would NOT treat you cruelly. My point- I will now only eat food animals(yes mine have names) that have had a healthy happy life and the end will be quick. as opposed to the long frightening journey to a slaughterhouse where employees then mistreat(once is all it takes) the meat you will eat.
