Would my chicks like a mister in their run?

Hello,

I put a mist system up last week and they love it. We've had a heat wave here the last week (105 on Saturday!!) and my chickies were so hot even in the shade. They love walking under the mist.

I spray the runs or set up a sprinkler here on really hot days.

A few of the chickens really enjoy it, and run back and forth under the falling water. Most of them actually don't like it, and it's a quick way to get everyone to run into the coop during the day.

However, once I turn off the water and they can enjoy the nice wet grass, EVERYone loves it on a hot day. It really helps cool things off to spray the runs.

I don't think I'd go with a constant mister, but a sprinkler or something that comes on every once in a while works great here.

Good luck, whatever you do! I'm sure they will adapt either way.

I left a mister on for my pets for a couple of days - it was over 106 up here in Chico/Forest Ranch where we are.
I went out once and there was my potbelly pig, laying in the shade, being sprayed by the mist, with a layer of wet silkies perched on top of him...it was cute. The chickens all come in and out of the mist when its hot - I dont know if they need it or not, but they like it!

It gets really hot here in Texas so last year I used frozen water bottles to help keep everyone cool. I also had a trash can lid turned upside down I kept full of water with the frozen water bottles in it to keep it cool and the chickens loved it. I plan on getting them a pool so they don't have to fight over the lid and I will keep it shallow for them.

Yep, Redding was hot, hot, hot. I have the valves ready and the ditch dug and pipe run and all I need to do is put the pvc around the run which I plan to do this weekend for several misters.

Glad to hear that they like it. I have had this planned but didn't think it would get so hot so soon. I did install a portable air conditioner in the coop a couple of weeks ago for my sitting hen.

Welcome Lchickies from Redding!

I don't have misters, but I do have mini pools for them.
I have constant water flowing under the foundation of my house. A pump pumps the water up and out through a pvc pipe. The pipe pops out of the side of my house just above the ground. I ran more pvc pipe from there and guide the water to where I have set out 3 basins. They are just shallow bird baths and planter bottoms. I set them up so the water hits the first and cascades down to the other 2. I surrounded the area with large rocks and lots of smooth pea gravel. They love to stand in the bigger one and drink from the smaller ones. I think just getting their feet cooled off really helps. I clean out the basins daily with a scrubber and then just let them refill on their own again.
