Would these breeds fit in my plan?

Chris,

I guess my point was that they won't be testing their dominance by repeatedly raping the closest hen.

John

There will be fighting whether there are hens in their pen or not.

ETA, it is usually best to restart small. You can have all the planning down on paper and it will look grand, but reality will bite ya and it will get frustrating, as you might know. If you ease into it , it will start easy and you will gain valuable insight to grow int he direction you want to.

I started with 2 chicks.

Anyone had experience with dorkings? Have read they are tasty. Are they hardy and do they free range well? What other white egg breeds (preferably heritage) are recommended. I hope I have posted this in the right place. Thanks!

Thanks to those who are staying on topic. I have most of my plans done. I just can't pick my starting breed. I really like the idea of a heritage poultry farm. I have 4 acres for lots of birds. I will be having most breeders in tractors. I would like to sell show birds, chicks, hatching eggs in addition to the meat and eggs i sell anyway. I'm toying with the idea of selling chicks through a feed store as well. I looking for insider info on these birds. I know not many people have them. Or if there are any heritage breeds i don't have listed i should consider. This is a life long dream for me that is finally getting rolling. I'd also like to know kid friendliness.

flying dragon, you have posted inside someone else's thread. You need to go to "breeds Genetics, and Showing" (you can click on that title in blue above) and then go to the right and click on "post new topic"

I'm glad to hear you aren't planning on jumping in with all the breeds at once. Especially with a new baby on the way. I've got 3 different colors of wyandottes. Calm friendly birds. The only others on your list that I've had are the RIR and the Javas. I sold both of those flocks because I was cutting back on the number of breeds I had.

I wouldn't consider any breed kid safe really. I haven't had any bad roos with mine, but you never know when one is going to jump on a little person. All my breeds like it when the grandkids feed them and come running to the fence, but I don't allow them in the pens.

How are the wyandottes with winter? I have rir and a couple others now and we have frostbite bad. How are your roos temperament? My rir roo is just awesome. I love that wyandotte come in so many colors. How are they with laying?

They are great with winter. They have rose combs so no frostbite. The roos are nice and calm too. I've never had a mean or aggressive one. My BLRs are good layers, the blues not quite as good. My silver laced have really just started laying so I really don't know for sure about them yet. They are a slow maturing breed.

Thats great to hear! I forgot to ask how they are with free ranging. They lay brown eggs right?
