i was at the feed store this morning talking with this old feller and we got on the subject of chickens. he was tellin me that he take fly strips(the sticky strips) and hangs them in is pens and when the bugs get caught on it the chickens can eat them off. he said he's never had a problem with them and that they have never hurt any of his chickens. would this be safe?

NO! do not put those in your coop i had one hanging from the ceiling it fell and one of my chickens got tangled in it.
I had to cut it out of her feathers "poor Baby" it took a long time for them to grow back. [IMG]

They are very sticky i don't see how that would ever work it sticks to anything it comes in contact with.

I agree with oegblady. A good fly trap that I found to use around chickens is called Rescue! Fly trap. They sell them at walmart. It's basically a bag with some stinky stuff and you fill the bag with water. Flys are attracted to the stinky stuff, they get in the bag and can't get out again.
Also, food grade DE helps to keep down the fly population.

Quote:gritsar - I tried that stinky bag stuff and I almost got sick from the horrible smell! [IMG] I hung it on my patio and for days I kept smelling this horrid smell - I couldn't figure out what the heck it was until I ran into it head first! [IMG] I promptly threw it in the trash - I'd rather have flies than smell that!!! LOL!

Yep, it can be strong. Then again, I live surrounded by commercial chicken houses and 150 head of cattle. Define horrid. [IMG] [IMG]

Quote:I use these and they only work if i didn't use the stinky stuff but put that blue streak fly bait in instead that stuff works real good.
    ( NO smell)

Hang them out of the reach of kids and chickens they are very toxic.

"Define horrid" - I love it!

Ive heard of people saving the dead flies from these stink traps, rinsing or washing them or whatever... and feeding them to their chickens.

    Again... define horrid.

Doesn't it say on the bag to hang AWAY from human activity???

I hang one on the back fence line and let the neighbors smell it [IMG]

No really, I did that with my first one because of their dogs' flies, but when I replaced it I put them more or less in the middle of my yard - furthest from all the neighbors and my house as I could get it. It really isn't that bad except at night when the air gets still.

The stinky bags work because flies are attracted to the stench.
You want to hang them away from your animals to draw the flies away.

Erg! Washing the dead flies sounds like a nasty idea - they dissolve after a couple days in the liquid anyhow.

I guess you could pick them off the cheap sticky rolls but why?

Quote:Mine didn't. Or else I just had a LOT of flies. I filled up at least 6-8 bags last summer - without any farm animals on my property!! Yikes!!
