Would this Vent work for my coop

Looking good!!!!!!! I was surprised to see snow already

I am looking forward to winter as it is a beautiful time of year. But i am not ready for it just yet

Even with the cold you need ventilation, Chickens respirations at rest are something like 340 per MINUTE...moisture in there airway, moisture from droppings, ammonia can cause them respiratory illness.

When they have an enclousure even with ventilation, they can keep warm as they snuggle together. You cant close them up completely.

but you do have a very good size coop/run...you just missed a little something...

Yep, you will need ventilation - up at the top, not from the pop door (that will just give them a draft). Check out patandchickens' ventilation page.

Thank you everyone. We are working on vents this weekend as we are putting up the insulation.

Snow time is normal here!! Nice thing is right now it melts by afternoon. But by halloween we will be around -10 and have almost 2 feet of snow on the ground that sticks around till spring.

Ventilation is vital to bird health. Alaska is an extreme climate tho. May just close up tight at night and ventilate during daytime to prevent ammonia gas buildup. Do not use metal poles for roosts. Will give birds feet frostbite. Do put lots of loose straw in for them to huddle in if too cold to roost. Insulation may be necessary up there for sure. Two other things:

Install a 24" tall roll of chicken wire around inside to prevent birds from sticking their heads thru (coons will pull them thru fence a piece at a time) You may have wolverines up there.

Also, get a small fence charger (5 mile range) and put up at least 4 courses of 14 ga galv steel hot wire around the whole pen. It costs something like 6 cents a month to run it.

I did mine with 72" tall 2x4 welded wire, set in cement trench. No protection overhead from hawks but I have lots of resident crows that run all hawks and owls away when they come around. Mine is 185' around.

So on a coop like the one in the picture what dimension would your vents be and how many would you have?

Sorry to steal your thread ... I'm just trying to get a clear picture for the coop I'm going to build next week.

I have not had any preditor problem and I am a stay at home mom and outside all the time, plus my dogs keep away any preditors if there ever becomes a problem I will for sure have the chicken wire( havea bunch I can use). We have no racoons here just mink, wolverine,fox, and martins. My whole property is also fenced so they have to get into two fences to get to the chickens. I also lock them at night in the coop when most of the preditors are out. Ty for the advise,

Yes we are insulating the walls and roof, we also have 2x4 for thier roosts and useing hay, wood shavings for beding and warmth I will have a 100w light bulb above the roosts when it gets colder then -20 the coop will be opened up during the day and locked down at night cause that is when it gets the coldest. We are going to put up to vents on each side of the slanted walls so air can curculate. Since this our first coop and first winter with chickens everything will be trial and erer hopefully we have thought about everything and have a good winter .

Some people use the rectangular heat register covers for ventilation... then you could cut a square hole instead of a round one.


I've seen some use decorative , some not, just make sure you use enough of them!
