I could see where lugging 100# sacks wouldn't be doable for a lot of folks, but I'm pretty big. That said, the first thing I do is divide it into 5 gallon buckets when I get home. It's much easier to handle and stores much better in buckets.
Would you buy a 25# bag of feed?

I asked this question because I can't unload a 50# bag from my car. Having to wait for someone to help me is frustrating. There are no layer feed choices in 25# bags in my area, or that I know of. I like to supplement with a few leftovers, a very little bit of cracked corn, greens, additional protein to keep the protein balance, and my chickens free range some. It takes forever for my 6 hens to consume a 50# bag.
If the price/lb. were the same or even just a little higher, I would certainly buy 25# bags.
Just wondering how many others have similiar thoughts.

is there a way you could get a yard cart or wheelbarrow to the back of your vehicle and roll the 50# bag of feed out of the vehicle and into the cart or wheelbarrow ? if you cant find 25# bags you will have to figure out how to work the 50# bags ........just an idea !!!!! good luck workin out the issue !!!!!!
I was low on cash once and bought 5 lbs. to get me by a couple of days when I had 10 birds. But now, with 50 - 100 birds wouldn't make much sense.
Some people may not be capable of picking up 50 lbs. though.

when my dh was gone all summer, I ended buying a wheelbarrow because I had a hard time bringing the 50 lb bags all the way to the barn. plus the straw and hay bales too. I always buy 3 bags of layer, 1 bag of scratch, and 1 bag of Boss per month. the wheelbarrow was so much easier and I found I could haul 2 bags at a time in it without feeling like it was too heavy.

I like Mervin's idea. Easier to handle and the feed will keep better. Add some buckets and lids to your cart at your next trip and part them out right after you check out. Who knows, if they have good employees, one should do it for you. Then bring a couple empties back each time. No different than those reusable shopping bags.

My DH helps me with 50# bags, I would just prefer to be able to carry the bag myself. Pushing a wheelbarrow up the steps into the laundry room won't work. I do store the feed in two plastic containers. This is not such a big problem, it would just be nice to have a 25 lb. bag.
