As a parent, I'd say it'd depend on the kid's qualifications. I know little of sailing, so I'd have to go with the opinions of someone I'd consider qualified. As a child, well...my *&()( parents wouldn't let my super smart, qualified sister go to fully sponsered astronaut training. It'd wouldn't have cost them a dime, they just did it for meanness for all I know.
