Would you set this damaged egg?

I'd set it and just see what happens, worse case scenario is that it goes rancid and you have to toss it, best case scenario is that it hatches out.

My concern is with how "scrambled" the eggs might have gotten to be handled roughly enough to crack/smash eggs to begin with.

Agree...I have the same concerns about what I can't see. I'm prepared for the worst-case scenario: total loss on this batch. But maybe with some luck, a few may have survived.

Seriously, though, the breeder is going to ship replacements next week.

Try setting it and let us know how it does. I don't think it hurts to try! Plus, your results can help others in the future judge if it might be worth setting a cracked egg that doesn't have a broken membrane.

Me, too...I did (nicely) suggest a different method. We'll see how shipment #2 goes...

And if that is how they are shipped dont expect any better results. Shipped eggs should be individually wrapped, the box lined with bubble wrap and set in some sort of good packing material that won't settle during shipping. The box should be so full that there can be absolutely no movement of the eggs.

I would never ship my eggs in that manner.

So...I went ahead and set the egg yesterday. Today, I noticed some kind of crystallized matter (looks like leakage to me) near the cracked area, so this one was pulled. In the future, I think I'd just toss ones this badly mangled.
