Would you take a chicken to a nursing home?

Im inspired. Im going to get a bunch of the kids that come over all the time and grab some of the "petting zoo" and organize a visit. How great of you!!

Thanks everyone! I've been handling some of them a lot as part of a training program so they should be great for this.

What would you use to wash their feet? Shampoo? Liquid soap?

When I worked in nursing homes personal pet visits were OK, but animal visits to the other residents required a vet certification. Hopefully that is not required where you are or the staff don't care. Residents would love a chicken visit.

I take mine to the nursing homes and to the preschool.
One of the nursing homes acts as if they really don't want them. They say the patients might get peeked. The residents love them!!!
I did get diapers but we usually just hang out in the patio area and I pick up the poop. I take the sweeter birds. I reassued the director that the pullets were disease free and actually there are few diseases that people can get directly from them. I also let the pullets dust bath in DE which is food grade and not only won't hurt the people but also controls the mites.

The one nursing home where we visited had numerous problems with the state. The patients like the children need a lot of contact with living creatures. It is good for them. The children are taught the best way to handle the chickens. The elderly are not allowed to pet them at one home because of chance that they might get peeked.
I bring food and water for the birds and paper towels for the clean up and the diapers to the homes.
The preschool has a playpen that the now big sized birds sit on. They sit on the side and the teacher puts paper towels on the floor for catching the poop. The children then observe, paint, draw weight, or pet them and the little pullets really love it.

Be sure the nursing home administrator says it is OK, and get diapers. Voice of experience here.

The residents will love it!!!

Hey, this is exactly what I want to do with my hen! I'd like to take her to hospitals as well. Anyone have experience with this? I'm assuming rules are much stricter, but people bring kangaroos, mini horses, and lambs to hospitals, why can't an infertile retired show bird?

My 91-year-old grandmother still lives in her home (how, I'm hot too sure, but that's another thread). Last weekend DBF and I packed up our 2 layers, a BSL and RIR, and took them to visit her. She has an enormous fenced yard, which is probably 5-8x bigger than mine. She was tickled, the birds loved having grass again, and I enjoyed watching them explore.

They were cute, though, and followed me everywhere. I

HELL YEAH! I'd take a chicken to a nursing home. Put a diaper on it! Show it around!

Those poor people suffering in those places like old work horses turned out to pasture until they die. If they want to see a queen dance the polka i'd make it happen.

Take that chicken in!

A diaper is probably the only precaution i'd take. Maybe some hand sanitizer for those who touch it.
