Gotta agree with the person who said that no one had any way of knowing that you had an emergency, and to add that here in MI (and i do believe all over the country) the pedestrian always has the right of way. If they are in the street it's your job as a responsible driver to slow down and be careful not to injure them.

And in a small town in Canada at one time, my daughters, young and foolish, discovered that if they stood at the edge of the curb and acted like they were going to step into the street all the traffic would screech to a halt. They caused havoc a few times before I realised what they were doing. Yes, I did reprimand them, but it's an example of how serious the 'pedestrian right of way' rule is. So, even tho your emergency was very important to you, without a siren and flashing lights you are just another speeding law breaker to them.

Actually, cops won't give you a speeding ticket here in emergency situations (not even sure if they legally can). Anyways, I still stand firm, and with the law, that people shouldn't be traipsing in the middle of the road, especially not with children. Because, no matter who is right/wrong, a car can still kill a person if it runs them over. Anyways, I'm done splitting hairs. I would do it again in a heartbeat, except, maybe next time, just blow past the idiots instead of slowing for stupidity.

And perhaps somewhere out in cyberspace this evening there is somebody explaining how their family likes to go out for a nice walk each day, but their nice walks are being ruined due to the people who can't obey the speed limit or show common courtesy towards pedestrians.

I was riding with my sister over to her step-daughter's house in Louisville, and (I'm not kidding you here), there was a line of older teens stretched across the neighborhood road, they heard us coming, looked back at us, and continued to walk slowly not even bothering to move out of our way. My sister stepped on the gas pedal, and they got out of her way fast!

Her step-daughter and her husband told me they never get out of any one's way, and if you tell them to get out of the way of your vehicle, they tell you, they live here and you need to be respectful!

That neighborhood has nice, roomy - sized sidewalks!

If the people were in the middle of the road, they are at fault. Period. They were just TRYING to be ornery...
Next time call the police on them. Its illegal to walk down the middle of a road and obstruct traffic... its also dangerous to other drivers..what if you had to slam on your brakes to avoid hitting them and another car hit you from behind? Or what if you had to swerve to aviod them and you hit an oncoming car head on? Next time call the police on them. Idiots..

Ever notice it's always the other person; young drivers, old drivers, people talking on cell phones, people texting, people driving too slow (good thread on that the other day), people driving too fast, people following too close, people walking in the street, darned bicyclists, darned peoples kids, darned peoples dogs, darned Amish horses crapping on the roads, darned people who only think about themselves. Darn them all! We should show no regard for them whatsoever because they are all idiots.

That "idiot" who was hollering at her to slow down because his young child was on a bicycle on an otherwise calm, dead end street was probably saying the same about her.
