Wow, freshly-laid eggs are warm!

Thanks! I was glad no one was with me because when I found the egg I immediately went into that voice moms use with their toddlers the first time they go poo in the potty, "Oh, gooooood girrrl, I'm so proud of you!! What a biiiiig girl you are!" My hens gave me that look like they're half-way curious but also a little embarrassed for me.

Yes I know that look....

I love the warm eggs, freshly laid. It's so nifty to go to a nest a hen has left and find the warm egg there. I have some nests several hens use, and there are a few eggs there, with one really warm one just laid.

Some hens do sit there a while and warm up the other eggs, but finding just one, still warm, is somehow just better than finding several eggs. Dunno why.

I once had a hen lay her egg just as I reached in her nest, and it plopped right into my hand. I was so jazzed all day about it!

We were at a zoo recently and one of my boys observed, "Do you think the animals think we're here as entertainment for them?" I wonder sometimes what the chickens are thinking while watching us watching them!

You have come to the right place to be assured you are not crazy. My family has begun referring to me as the crazy chicken lady and they do not share my joy and love of my chicken hobby. I, too, was embarrassingly excited when I found my first egg. I took pictures of it and immediately cooked it and savored every bite (which was approximately 2 since it was a banty egg).
Congrats on your first egg and there is nothing like finding a fresh warm one!! Especially when it is chilly outside.
Welcome!!!

How were you able to actually watch it? What nesting materials was she sitting on? Or, don't they really sit...is it more of a squat? I'm so curious!

Thanks! I've been spending way too much time online since joining but it's amazing how many chicken-related questions pop into my brain that need an answer right now, so I've been making good use of the Learning Center and forums.

Yes, she did more of a squat than a sit, and as soon as it was out she jumped up and ran off. It just happened that her rear end was toward me when I went out and peered into the hutch. I noticed her vent and the area around it had sorta dropped down from her tail, and she had this concentrated look when she turned to look at me. Sorta like a baby doing a doo doo. I realized what was happening and stayed still while she laid the egg; she had the most relieved look when she got up and her rear end tucked itself back under the tail like it usually is. It was comical and wondrous at the same time!

Wow! I love where you say she looked relieved when she got up...it seems like it would be a relief to get that big thing out! Fascinating about her rear end distending--makes me want to install a chicken cam in the nest box. As a kid my dad had a camera in the cow's maternity barn and sometimes we'd watch cows calving on the closed-circuit TV monitor (he'd be watching to see if there was trouble he needed to help with). TV for farm kids!
