Wow, I never really believed that chickens memories were THAT short...

Erm, I'm pondering how on earth you could be pronouncing it so that it does rhyme with 'rooster' but I'm afraid you got me there!

It's pronounced something like these three syllables...

'wuss-stir-shurr'

So no, sadly, none of that rhymes with 'rooster' I'm afraid. It would've been nice to claim it did though!

Interesting. My mother was born in England (Yorkshire County) and her parents lived nearly half their lives there. Both she and her mother pronounced it woo-ster. Rhymes with rooster.

And Luddenden Foot, the town they were from, was pronounced Ludden Foot.

OK, so you laugh at silly American tourists b/c they can't pronounce your towns. I live in the (USA's) Pacific Northwest, home to many Native American tribes. Try these cities' names on for size:

Puyallup
Sequim
Issaquah
Snoqualmie
Spokane
Dosewallips

These are pronounced:
pew-AUL-up
skwim
ISS-a-kwah
sno-KWAL-mee
spo-CAN
doe-see-WHALL-ups

And that's only a few of them...

So there!

And as for the OP's forgetful chicken, mien did the same thing with snow over & over this past winter. Each time was a brand new freak-out about the New White World.

Oi Oi saveloy

Another midlander here, Im from Coventry...although I now live in Alaska. I miss home like mad. Especially the food....

I married a US Airman....and the fun I and my family had taking him around all places and getting him to guess how they were pronounced. ha ha ha ultimate entertainment

Is that mean? We've been married for 8 years this year he must have enjoyed it?
Been away from home for 4 years and seems like a lifetime.

Just wanted to say Pip Pip... and Rule Britannia lol

Off to put the kettle on now....

Some chickens are as smart as a rock.... I've seen other chickens though that actually seem semi-intelligent!

Really? Mine aren't really that bright, when one is in the run and the others are outside, on the other side of the chicken wire, they kind of try to get through it.

Chickens. Go figure.

When I lived and worked in Asheville NC, we had some residents from a neighboring town Leicester as co-workers. When I pronounced it "Lester" I was quickly informed that the correct pronunciation was "Lee-ses-ter"

I don't think so!

When we brought Sammy home (salmon Fav.) we decided she was most definitely NOT the brightest bulb in the pack

If she'd get scared of something she would just sit! Goofy bird... She also has this look like there's a constant question mark above her head

Yeah well, "slow" or not, we still love 'em right!

Oh yeah, I live in New Tripoli... Constantly mispronounced New TRIP-oli rather than New TRIP-ol-E . Sorry, that almost doesn't even make sense to me and I'm typing it

My chookies seem smart in comparison to some. They all go in out of the rain (we don't have snow), however, they do seem to like paddling through puddles. Maybe they like wet feet.

And while we are on the odd pronunciation thing try these:

Canowindra - pronounced Can-OW-ndra
Goonoo Goonoo - pronounced GUNNA gunoo
Woonona - pronounced Won-OO-na
Tumut - pronounced Tyoo-mutt

The City of Worcester = The City of Wuss-stir
Worcestershire = Wuss-stir-shurr

Definitely.

I've lived around these parts all my life, and the only people who rhyme Worcester with rooster are tourists. Worcester rhymes with... well... nothing actually! (Nearest I can get is 'buster', but even that's not quite right.)

There's definitely no 'oo' in it anyway, so rooster is definitely out. Sorry ddawn.

Pip pip to you too redtailross! Talking of putting the kettle on, I've just had a lovely PG Tips myself!

And SusanH - you're totally and utterly right - Leicester is also somewhere I've lived (only for three years as a university student, but still) and it is most definitely pronounced 'less-stir'.

Hurray for weird and wonderful pronunciations!

Although it seems that the States have more than their fair share too actually!
