Wow...lost our dog today...

I'm so very sorry for your loss. My female dog died a couple of years back, and like your dog, my male deteriorated rapidly after that. We had to put him down finally last month. No one wanted to, but it wasn't fair to let him suffer any more.

Thanks so much for all of the wonderful replies. It is really great to be able to share this with people that understand. Both the cat and dog were a rescue, and they just immediately bonded. It was just a shock. I am so glad we had just gotten the other dog. She is such a comfort to the boys right now. She is upset as well, so they are all comforting each other.

I am so sorry. It must really feel empty at your house right now. I am glad you have other pets to cuddle. That helped me. You mentioned you had just gotten another dog. Some of you may remember I posted when I had to put my beloved Abby to sleep. She was very old and started having seizures and strokes repeatedly. Well just days before that I was at the vet for yet another pet and the DR wife asked if we had room on our farm for the sweetest dog ever! Well whats a girl to do?

Hubby was at work so............When he got home this huge moose of a dog( my son named him Bruce) greets him at the door. He has turned out to be a real joy, very loving and gentle and a great chicken watch dog. The lord works in mysterious ways and I believe your other dog and my Bruce were sent to us because God knew we would need their comfort.

I'm sorry about your loss. I love just about all animals, but dogs seem to have a special way of becoming such a part of the family, don't they. May your sadness pass quickly. :aww

I'm truly sorry you lost your bulldog.

Anyone who has been around them knows what a tremendous personality they have, and I'm sure there will be too many quiet times in the near future that make you miss her. The snoring, sneezing, and general 'noise-making', are the same reasons I love my Pugs. I know you will remember her fondly.

To all of you who have lost pets and have small children, I recommend the book 'Dog Heaven' by Cynthia Rylant. It was a wonderful source of comfort to my children when their grandmothers beloved Boston Terrier passed away. I even teared up a little bit......and then had to smile at the wonderful illustrations. There is nothing more comforting than knowing an older or sick pet is having a ball in Heaven!! If you haven't read this book.......go find it. There will come a time when you may need it, so stick in on a shelf until the moment presents itself. Great Book.

I grew up with English Bulldogs. They are practically human, and will steal your heart. There is no such thing as a "typical 11 year old English Bulldog," since their life expectancy is much shorter than that. None of ours lived to be more than eight years old, and our vets told us that was old. You did a fantastic job with Cookie.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your cat and your dog. I had to have my Cocker Spaniel put down last week. At least Cookie was home, laying in her usual spot with her family around, and she died peacefully in her sleep. Sudden death, while shocking, is far better than watching them decline and then having to make that difficult final decision.
