I used to do the work of art thing... and sometimes I still do, but I'm sure with you about the amount of waste ...

I honestly never thought to use fabric, I don't think my son really cares if he rips paper or not. He's so meticulous about getting every scrap of paper off his gift, he'd probably welcome the idea of one piece of cloth that comes off all in one piece! Guess I'll be looking after Christmas for some marked-down fabric!
 
We use normal paper mostly. Other times we use butchers paper, brown thin paper that is sometimes used for packaging, ect. Once we went to a recycle shop and bought all these old big shopping centre type building plans. It was A2 size and we'd get the kids to paint the backs however they wanted. And we used that for wrapping. It was great fun, I even painted a few up myself.
 
We have used some nice Christmas bags with tissue paper that have stood the test of time over the years. As soon as the gift is out the paper and bags are folded for next year!
