Wrath's Marans

Not having much faith in the Australorp broody. She runs around all screaming bloody murder if anyone gets within 10' of her, puffy turkey, and cluck cluck cluck. But doesn't want to commit to sit on the eggs full time (mainly overnight). The only saving grace is it's the favorite nest box so the eggs are incubating when others are in there.
I've tried blocking her off thinking she's getting bullied, but she'll sit for a spell and then frantically want out.
I'll leave the eggs in there awhile longer and candle them to see progress at day 7, but fear they're getting too cold.

Best of luck to you. Last spring when I let Jersey Gena sit she broke the rules several times and I was worried. she still managed to hatch 7 of the 9 eggs she was given. This year she sat still for 2 weeks then walked away from the nest in week three and none hatched. It’s still early in the season so plenty of time for lots more hatching.

That's adorable. I can't wait until I have a broody. In a perfect world, next spring.

Broodys are so much fun and also so stressful. They do everything you are told not to do to chicks but somehow broody raised chicks end up healthier in the end. Everyone says chicks need to be a minimum of 85 degrees in their third week and not feed anything but chick crumble. Last year I watched a broody take her 3 week old chicks out in the rain to dig for worms. Every one of them did just fine.

Yep, I've doubled the flock number from last year. If I get more broodys than last year I'll have set coops up in the farmers cornfield.🤣

.. the plot thickens.
... the plot chickens.... fixed it for you!
I've got one under the heater setting on turner and not bothering the eggs. I may pull it out at the 7 day candle if everything is consistent.
Would you still have any Govees in there? Last year the NR360 I had held steady for a few days and got worse with the swings toward the end, you might be best off with at least one Govee left in just in case!

Sounds like you need another incubator ready in case she breaks you could keep them going :celebrate

I think this sounds like a solid plan anyway

Well chickens have their own agenda that you need to bend to, so you'll get a broody when they say you'll get a broody 😂
Or get silkies and you'll always have broodies whether you want them or not. I'm back down to one again, second time being down to one since December. I had 7, or was it 9 🥴 I'll get a few broke and several more take their place :barnie

🤣 Dang auto-correct !!

This is a very smart move. I'll leave it in...♥️

Any recommendations? 🤔

Across the field is a trucker with shipping containers....it's like coop fate. 🤪
