Thanks for the pics. I’m hatching f1 olive eggers that are from a barred whiting true blue rooster and black copper marans hens. I was planning on keeping all the barred pullets. I hope they look similar to your pics but with smaller pea combs.View attachment 4111120This is the hen. I basically exactly how I want mine to end up (except mine will be clean legged). The golden is open for interpretation so can be a tad darker. The back and breast should be as in a dark cuckoo, ideally not brown.View attachment 4111121this is the cock, this one isn’t brilliant but his colour is good. The black parts of a BCM should be like a dark cuckoo and then the copper has light blue-grey barring.
Edit: my biggest chicken project at the moment is combining the barring from English Dark Cuckoos onto the Black Copper pattern to create this variety. It’s probably the rarest of the accepted varieties, and the flashiest of the varieties accepted in England (BCMs aren’t recognised here).
I use Amazon Photos, it automatically uploads them to the site, if you a prime membershipTried getting more pics but phone storage issues. Does anyone use an external site to host pics..preferably free? I've got Google photos at moment but still have issues a lot with storage.
I used to have a Photobucket account but I think it's pay now.
Are your marans blacks or black coppers? I don’t see much copper on the hens and I’d expect more ground colour on those chicks at that age if they were bred from coppers. Those hens should be golden cuckoos if the dams are BCMs, so I’m thinking they’re black. Thanks for the pics. Edit: I just got a pic sent to me from someone growing out chicks I previously sold from this cross. I don’t see much color in them yet.

they came to me as Black Copper. They do have minimal copper on their hackles (over melanized??). I don’t know too much about the blacks, I’m assuming the roosters are all black? The roosters in this line are full colored.Ar

Ah right just minimally coloured BCMs. It must be those same melanisers masking the copper in the young ones then.they came to me as Black Copper. I must say I am jealous of all the nice hens with copper hackles.Ah right just minimally coloured BCMs. It must be those same melanisers masking the copper in the young ones then.
Yes blacks marans are fully black cocks and hens.
I’m grateful for the amount of copper my girls have, but the melanised hens more consistently produce better males anyway. Hens with lots of colour can produce cocks with too much copper in their chest. As long as your line is producing fully and boldly coloured cockerels, I wouldn’t worry too much about the hens, though you could gradually increase it.I must say I am jealous of all the nice hens with copper hackles.
