CHAPTER FIVE REVISION

The weather is nice and clear today, so we are allowed outside. We free range in peace now. I am chasing after bugs with Prim, having a contest to see who can catch the most. Of course, I’m winning. I smile at her and she sticks her tongue out at me.
My favorite catches are grasshoppers. They’re so much fun to chase after! Jasper taught us how to sneak up on them and go in at them swiftly. What would I do without him?
Every time Jasper catches one, or finds food, he calls the girls over to get a share. I rarely get to snatch anything up because of all of the bigger chickens, but I still get a share… He makes sure of it.
Onyx, Prim, Daisy, Lilly and I are chasing after bugs in the high grass now. Its best pickings in there. We normally catch a lot of bugs there, but the big chickens don’t like to venture too far away from Jasper, so they never come in here, which is good for us.
I am enjoying myself, running and catching delicious bugs when I hear Jasper let out a loud, shrill squawk. I jump up, alert, and look around frantically.
We look out in the field, to see the hens raise their heads in alarm. Jasper is standing at attention. What in the world is going on here?
He lets out another cluck and all of the hens dash into the coop. I look around frantically, trying to see what’s wrong. Then I look up into the sky. Oh no. What I see just about gives me a heart attack! It’s a chicken hawk, on the hunt for its next meal!
“Run!” I yell.
“Go, go, go!” Onyx chants. We make a mad dash across the field. The hawk is pursuing us as Jasper stands out in the open, ready to defend his flock.
“Come on guys! We’ll be supper!” Daisy shouts.
We dive into the coop, just as the hawk sweeps down to catch us. It dips down, and then soars back into the sky, letting out an ear-piercing shriek.
Just when I think it’s over, it only gets worse.
The hawk circles around and sets its eye on Jasper, standing tall, defending his girls. “Jasper, look out! “ one of the hens squeals. The hawk swoops down and plummets toward Jasper! I’m praying in my head that Jasper will move. No, it can’t kill him!
The hawk is coming closer, when Jasper makes the most menacing noise, scaring everyone, including me. He is ready to fight, no matter if he dies or not. I just can’t look!
The hawk plummets toward him with unbelievable speed, almost like a bullet shooting out of an army plane. I start to cry as Jasper kicks up at the hawk, sending it flying into the air. It circles around and goes back in for the kill, talons out-stretched. I wince and look away.
Jasper makes another scary noise, and raises his head high and proud. If he dies, he will die proud. This is most definitely the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me.
The hawk reaches for Jasper and he flaps his wings and jumps up at it. He gets it with his sharp spurs and the hawk yells in pain and flies back into the air. It flies over the hill and out of sight.
The hens feel safe enough to return to the field and everyone cheers. They rush out and huddle around Jasper, who has a minor cut across his chest and a twisted foot.
It wasn’t enough to make anyone nervous, though. I wanted to go out there and talk to him, but I was too afraid that the hawk would return. I force my friends to stay in the coop with me for the next three days.
After those days were up, I got too bored to stand being in the coop and my friends convince me to go out again. I waddle slowly out of the coop and decide to chat with Primrose.
“What did you think about three days ago with the hawk?”
“It was the most terrifying thing ever! Did you see how he almost dies because he wanted to protect us? It was so… so…” she spoke like someone pushed the fader button on her. Her voice trailed off, and I took the hint that she didn’t want to talk.
On our way to the field, we noticed that Lilly was singing. The hens have dubbed her with the nickname, “Silly Lilly”. I guess it’s pretty accurate.
Nobody could really make out what she was singing; it was just kind of like mumbling.
And then all of the sudden, the chase is on.
I spot a fat grasshopper and decide to go for it. That little bugger shall be mine! I laugh menacingly, feeling quite spontaneous today.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I gave up the whole bread hunting thing and decided to focus on grasshoppers instead, They were much more worth it.
Anyway, I spotted my prey and pounced on it like Jasper showed me. I caught the little bugger and ate him up. The score was one, Cloudy, zero, everyone else! Yes!
Prim and Daisy are both chasing the same bug. How silly, when there are almost forty other hoppers in the field. I am pursing two grasshoppers at once, which is also kind of stupid, because there’s no possible way to get them both. I decide to focus on only one at a time.
We are having so much fun running and romping and eating bugs. We decide to head back to the coop because it’s getting dark.
Goodnight.
In the next couple of days, I notice that I am almost fully feathered, and so is everyone else! We are beautiful! I think a couple of the Amber Links are jealous, because they often smirk at us. It’s not very nice, but, hey, it’s the price you have to pay for being a show bird.
This time, we are free ranging alongside the older hens because the tall grass had to be cut down today. I stopped to growl and give those weird creatures the stink-eye, who were cutting down our grass.
Jasper approaches us as we are scratching or those dumb small bugs in the short grass. “Hello. How are you guys today?” he asks. “We’re fine, thanks. How are you?” Prim answers.
“I’m fine, but I have news to deliver to you all,” Jasper says.
“Oh, really? What is it?” Daisy chimes in. She cocks her head at him.
“Tonight, there is going to be a big storm. We must all prepare or someone will die. Be inside by sunset. You have been warned,” Jasper explains. “Oh, a storm! Really, after all that’s happened in the past couple of days! So you’re telling us that things could get worse?” Daisy rants.
“Calm down, young one. You will be fine, as long as you listen,” Jasper responds. “Fine,” Daisy sighs. She rolls her eyes and struts away.
“Ok, well, I best be on my way. We are collecting extra seed just in case the storm lasts. Bye now!” Jasper says, as he walks away.
I must admit, I’m a bit angry at Jasper. I know it’s not his fault that there’s going to be a storm, but he’s the one that delivered the news to us. Well, I guess that was for our own good.
I’m afraid that is Daisy keeps up that temper of hers, she’s going to get beaten up one day. I try to tell her to calm down, but she just won’t listen. I sigh and set off, collecting bugs and eating them along the way.
There is a berry patch along the fence, but all of the hens are over there. I don’t really want to go near there because of the hens, who will be very greedy over the berries. They are even fighting with each other to get the sweet berries. Maybe when they leave, I’ll sneak over and see if they dropped any. I’ve only had a berry once, and it was delicious!
I’m not very worked up over the storm because we should be safe in the barn, right? I mean, we sleep there every night and no predators can get in at us. We’re finishing up when we hear thunder in the distance. It shocks me and I turn to my friends.
“We better head in early. The storm’s going to start soon,” I warn. There’s more thunder and I catch a glimpse of lightning over the hill.
“Let’s go!” I pressure. The thunder is louder and it’s starting to rain.
“Guys!” I yelp. We take off running into the barn, along with all of the hens. We get pushed to the side and get soaking wet. So much for getting berries.
Finally, after we make out way into the barn, we can barely even find a place to perch!
