Wry crook neck silkie chicks

Thank you for all the lovely comments! I am adult nurse, so although people are nothing like chicks, we see the same sort of thing in liver failure pts who get brain swelling due to toxins... The only thing that worries me is the amount of steroids / vits I have been giving as it seems a huge dose for his little frame! But...... This morning he is holding his head to the side when he walks and not in between his legs, I'm don't want to jinx it, as he is still pretty rough, but he seems a little better! He is still eating and drinking alone, and I read about wrapping him in a towel to drop feed mess and it works so well, calms him right down! The other thing is I have left egg in there with him, and when I did separate them nugget, (the poorly one) went crazy, running into the sides looking for him... But everything I read says to separate! But it just dresses him out, and surely keeping stress levels down helps?

Hard boiled egg yolk will give him some extra strength to make it through treatment. The other chick's can also eat it, it's very good for chicks.

I'm sorry your going through this. How old are they (I may have missed it if you said it already. )
What temperature do you keep your brooder?

Oh, and if he's just with one other chick, I wouldn't worry about separating them, but that's just me.

I've had a gerbil die because it was stressed out by the vet separating them. He probably would have made it had they not stressed them out so much :(

Being a nurse certainly helps with getting certain medications. Did the dosages for the steroid give recommendations by weight of the chicken? I'm glad to hear there is some improvement. I agree that you should leave the other chick, Egg with little Nugget. I think separating is often suggested if there is a risk of being bullied by other chickens, but it doesn't sound like it applies with your chicks.

Thanks for the update.

Hi, i have the brooder at around 60 degrees, been cooling it down the older they get, they will be 5 weeks on Friday!

Yeh the steroids are weighted, he is having 0.8mg a day, which he seems to like :s

I have put some yolks in, but neither of them seem very interested :(

My main worry is that he is not getting enough fluids at the moment, I am dripping small amounts onto his beak as I don't want to risk aspiration, but don't think I will have a choice if he doesn't drink on his own. It's the tipping his head bag after taking the glup he is struggling with!

There is no bullying going on that I am aware of, and when I am giving nugget his mess they both cheep until they are back together :(

I have also been keeping them without artificially light, as I read this can help and I am willing to try anything at this point!!!

This was him this am, but again tonight he is holding his head between his legs more :(

Ok... More questions! The more I research the more confused I become, nugget is still with us and it's night 4, so he is doing better that poor omlet did. I have been reading more and apparently vit A inhibits the absorption of vit E??? So giving the multi vit drops, poly vi sol, etc.... I am slowing down the vit E that can be absorbed as they all contain vit A?

Arghhhh

I didn't know that about vitamin A. I suppose you could give vitamin E capsules with the selenium to be safe. You could squeeze the vitamin E oil inside the capsule into some sort of treat. It does all get confusing.

It is strange how different chickens like different treats. My chickens don't care for boiled eggs, but go mad for scrambled eggs.
