Wry crook neck silkie chicks

I think it depends on what is the cause, if it is a vaulted skull and therefore a Brain injury, the steroids will be needed, if it is the deficiency then the vitamins without should work. It seems to get a lot worse before getting better even when giving them the treatment, some mornings I would think he was never going to pull through!
Just a tip make sure that you do not have any deep water bowls because when it gets bad and they are dragging their heads along the floor if they get stuck in a bowl they will drown!

I used these as I couldn't get poly here!

I know there is slot of risks, especially hand feeding, but I had already lost one chick, and it is do anything or you are going to loose them anyway! X

Correct, if it is a thiamine deficiency, which it probably is , then all the other things aren't necessary . I've had silkies for 8 years , many with vaulted skull but I've never seen a brain injury. Mine free range with large fowl as well. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I finally found the poly visol without iron yesterday, I mixed the selenium and bit E into it and gave some to the little chick. She is not happy about being upside down;( I hope we see a difference after a couple days. I had made a concoction of nutridrench, vit E, selenium, and electrolyte water, of course I was afraid I didn't have the amounts right and I couldn't tell a difference at all after a day of giving it to her. Hopefully now with the right mix with the poly we will be better soon! I will keep you all posted! Thanks for the help, even my dear husband felt so bad for her yesterday now that her head is completely turned and upside down;( I don't know what I would do without this awesome site!

And she just dunked her self in her water so her head was completely drenched.....I gently blow-dried her in the bathroom with the lights off so it wouldn't be so bright and frightening. Is it normal for her not to even try to eat? Last night I managed a few crumbles down her beak but should I wait and see how she progresses to eat her self or should I be hand feeding her until she can manage on her own?

You need to keep the food up to her. There are baby bird feeds available at pet stores. The one available here is poly- aid . It's a powder with probiotics added. I make it up to a slurry and draw it up into a syringe and feed it slowly, just a couple of ml at a time. Soft scrambled egg is another option.
Btw, polyvisol doesn't contain thiamine B1 , only B6 & 12.

Enfamil PolyVisol does indeed contain thiamine. It's listed in the ingredients as meeting 100% of infant requirements: http://www.amazon.com/Enfamil-Poly-Vi-Sol-Multivitamin-Supplement-Toddlers/dp/B001F0RA0W

I had to hand feed my little guy 3 times a day, the egg mixed with a little nutri drench.... It took about a week before he started taking the egg off me, then even after a few mouthfuls he was shattered, and would need a rest.
If the crumb is the same one you have been giving him then it's probably no good, if it's a deficiency the crumb must not contain all he needs , then you need to change the food.
The head dragging bit is awful, I was lucky to be in holiday the week this happened and spent most of the day, and even set alarms to get up at night to give him some food and water....

Good luck!!!!

Remember to drop feed her water too! A little on the side on the beak seems to stimulate them to take the drops, but when things got real bad I had to drop it under his tongue! But the longer you can go without doing that the better!
Also with the egg, if you open their mouth and put a lump in the end they will swallow themselves :)

I also kept the lights down, noise and other pet/people from being around him to stop him getting scared and limit stimulation... This seems to help with the head upside down bit...
As he got better he would be all upright until he got scared or I put him out then it would go straight back on the floor, like he couldn't cope!
Sorry for all the replies! Just keep remembering bits!

Well my little grasshopper has passed away;( she was only a week old and I think she just wasn't strong enough. She grew weaker and wouldn't eat. I tried making a soupy mixture of feed and water with a little electrolytes but she just barely would swallow it. I am content she is peaceful now and not suffering and I know I tried my best. My children and I had a beautiful little ceremony with flowers and prayers. Boy you can get attached so fast!!
