Wry neck: Is Selenium absolutely necessary...

when giving vit E for wry neck? I have read it is but then in another link read it was toxic in too large amounts. What is the right amount and how do you make sure they are getting just that when you can only get it in 200mcg tablets?

I gave her the vit E and B that was recommended but held off on the Selenium for now. I also stopped the polyvisol as I read in a thread that the vit A in that works against the E. I called my vet but she has no clue and only has access to the same information I do it seems.

Any information would be appreciated it. I am learning as I go....one illness, mishap, deformity at a time....

I am currently dealing with this. I didn't know about the vitamin A bit, but I have vitamin E softgels and I cut them open and put them on her beak. It's been 24 hours and she is close to 90%. I don't use selenium and she has surely improved. As far as how much vitamin E...my pills are 200IU and I give them to her 2-3 times a day. She actually only manages to get a bit of it each time. Try looking for articles by Alan Stanford. He is an expert in silkies and the treatment of wry neck, crook neck, and brain injuries. He gives specific dosing based on a 2 pound bird...you figure it out from there.

Yes very great info, thanks! It is also encouraging to hear that your bird is at 90% after 24 hours. That is great! We are about the same as last night but I have only been giving her the vitamin E since late this afternoon. I have 400 IU softgels and have given her two today. I did read Alan's article which is where I found out about the selenium. My vet had no opinion one way or another about giving Prednisone so I didn't start her on it. Prednisone does mess with the immune system a bit I know because I have a cat on it for life. The vitamin A thing I read in a thread here somewhere about wry neck. I wish I would have saved it. It basically said to stop giving polyvisol once you start the vitamin E but it was ok to continue with the Avia Charge. I am keeping her isolated but she insists on going back with her two wyandotte friends every afternoon. She goes nuts and starts kicking things around her cage if I don't take her to them, lol. At least she feels good enough to be a brat!! I give her a couple hours with them then take her out. I figure at least this way they will still stay acquainted with each other and they do not bother her at all when she is having one of her head things. It is like they understand.

I was thinking today I am so glad all these things have happened during my second year of having chickens or I might not have thrown in the towel! It is kind of like the second baby - you feel more comfortable trying things and dealing with problems.
