I have a blue polish that was attacked by my blue Cochin. The Cochin pecked Dottie several times on her head and then had her pinned to the ground by her neck. Dottie's poor head started to swivel around after the attack this was on Wednesday. I started treatment for wry neck since she seems twisted. We were having to dip her beak in water to get her to drink, and having to place a yogurt mash which contained her vitamin e in her mouth and she then would eat it. Last night she got up and was moving about but still not eating on her own, until I brought my 2 month old phoenix pullet in and set her by her food bowl, well a little competition seemed to do the trick Dottie got up and ate until her crop was near bursting! She's drinking on her own and she is up and moving about instead of running backwards she is now moving forwards. Her head is still twisted slightly, she also trembles. Eyes are clear her aim is dead on as I am typing this she is busy pecking my daughter's yellow toe nail polish. I think the wry neck was brought on by the stress of her attack but what I don't understand is do chickens with wry neck tremble? I also noticed she seems to feel better in the afternoons-evenings as compared to the mornings. I know I have a long road to recovery for her and I am not even sure she will be 100% as she tends to favor the side her head twists towards. I am thankful she isn't completely stargazing. I brought in her mate and he just lays down by her side and she rests her head on him while she sleeps, well the Cochins came in this afternoon and just the sight of them sent poor Dottie's head to turning. Spike chased them off but they came back so I just moved the Cochin devils to the bathroom until DH finishes the netting on top of their run which hopefully will be today.

Questions I am asking.....

Do chickens with wry neck tremble?

Should I be using a different treatment?

Should I add electrolytes to her water?

I give her vitamin e 3x day and put the selenium is in her water should I use a different method to deliver the selenium?

If this is neurological will the treatment she is on now help?

Thanks everyone

Hi I have had two birds with wry neck in this last month first bird is 100% cured and my second bird can now walk and eat on her own which is a huge improvement! I'm using Alan Stanford's treatment for wry neck. Basically it consists of giving vitamin E selenium vitaminB and polyvisol liquid children's vitamins.I supplement the water with a special formulation of E then in a second waterer I give vitamins A D E with B.I got these supplements from first state vet supply. Then I give predinsone for brain swelling I give 1 milligram in am and 1 milligram in pm. you can look up Alan Stanford's treatment for wry neck online for doses and exact schedules.the predinsone has really helped my birds and I've had no I'll effects from it.my first bird is 100% cured thank God and my second is on her way. The predinsone is a steroid which reduces the swelling in the brain and it can not be stopped abruptly but must be weened off. There is a chance for side effects but I've not expirenced any in either bird. I really think Alan's treatment is a great treatment and my bird was back to health in 3 weeks. I'm on my first week with my second bird and she's making excellent progress. To answer your question yes the neck trembles with wry neck. Being neurological I highly suggest you look into Alan's treatment. If you have ANY questions at all please feel free to ask.I'd be more than happy to help. Feel free to PM me any time. This treatment really works! Hope this helps. Best wishes

To add to my first post its likely your bird has brain swelling and you will have to get that swelling down. That's where the perdinsone comes into play. It will reduce her brain swelling and help her return to normal. Both my birds have used the predinsone and I believe it makes a huge difference. I didn't like the idea of using a steroid but I knew it would help with the brain swelling and my birds have not experienced any bad or negative effects from it that I can tell. If you can't get the predinsone you can try low dose Bayer asprin for children. It will also help with the brain swelling given three times a day. Hope this helps. Best wishes

Thank you Realsis! I wonder if I if the vet supply by my house has the steroid,I am not even sure why the cochin attacked her,Dottie and Spike are house chickens who go out in the tractor in the mornings and evenings, they are our show birds. We brought the blue cochins in while their run was getting some repairs and a new netting on top and Dottie was at the feeder when the female attacked her. It is just so heart breaking to see her this way and just recently(like 10 minutes ago) her mate started pecking her while she was sleeping. So he has been placed in their indoor coop with the door closed while she is out walking around. I tried keeping her separated but she chirps and chirps so I allowed Spike to be with her and she seems happy with him around, but now that he is pecking her I guess she can be around my phoenix chicks, they are fast and are able to avoid her pecking them if she tries, but I am also trying to avoid stressing her out ugh I want to pull my hair out because all this is stressing me out but as long as I can get her back to somewhat normal then all will be well and as far as her upcoming competitions she will not be in any. I will just show my blue frizzy cochin in her place. Thank you for your advice I will get to the vet supply tomorrow.

Your welcome! I understand how you feel my bird I'm nursing now is my show bird. My first bird is 100% and you would never known she was ill. If you can't find the predinsone there human predinsone works too. you will want to give 1 milligram am and one milligram pm. I know 1800 pet meds carries it but they require a vet to OK the prescription. I hope all goes well and hope you can get the predinsone it really makes a difference! If not use three Bayer low dose children's aspirin a day it also will help the swelling. If you know anyone with asthma that might be on predinsone maybe you can get some from them. If you need any help at all feel free to ask. don't give up hope and have patience.it takes about 3 to 4 weeks to cure. My second case is going on her second week. she went from not being able to walk or eat by herself to eating and walking in her first week.it takes time so hang in there! You can cure this! And remember your not alone. I'll help any time just give me a pm. Good luck and God bless
