Wry Neck or something else?

I just cannot see that this chicken would have fowl cholera (pasteurella.) She looks very alert and chickens with cholera are very sick, lethargic, have runny eyes and nasal drainage, diarrhea, etc. It comes from other sick farm animals and is spread by those and rats. It is not very common in backyard flocks. To me, I think she is still swollen from the freezing temps, and the wattles are now pinking up with good circulation. Swelling is affected by gravity, so increased circulation may be causing all the edema in her wattles and legs.

Just keep giving supportive care, and hopefully in a few days, she will be back to normal. Keep us updated, and good luck.

Well, her wattles are back to normal Size and colour and her face is definitely better. Her throat area is swollen but better. She is eating and drinking and her poops are normal again. However she is non weight bearing on her right leg. It is the leg that she kept stepping on with the other one when circling. Both feet look swollen, but not that bad. What the heck is going on here? It’s like she has numerous diseases at once. If she’s still lame tomorrow I will bring her in and bath her feet to get a better look. Both my husband and the chicken are going to love that....not!

I also agree it’s not cholera. No nasal discharge, coughing etc. It’s like she has a couple of symptoms of some things and a couple of symptoms of another. Once her foot gets better her wing is going to fall off or something I’m sure.

So glad she doesn't have cholera! I saw the picture and had only seen illustrations of swollen wattles as examples of fowl cholera and figured it was worth ruling out. Also happy to hear she is improving.

I think she developed the wry neck because the infection in her crop or lungs is making it difficult to breathe so she was gaping to get air and then this. I have her in the bathroom with the window open enough for fresh air. Even tho it's -38c tonight. As soon as she eats, she falls asleep. Doesn't move much so it's no bother to have her inside. It sure has been a guessing game. I can't get Tylan in Canada as that's what she might need for her infection. I googled everything I could think of and Tarwood from some far away country is what's been said works. Geez, tell us how and how much. Anyway

Update on Wry neck. This morning her head was on the floor and not moving. I thought the end was near. After I fixed her breakfast of eggs, grapes, cantelope with Vit. E and selenium and added Poly Visiol, I went in and took a deep breath expecting the worst. Well, here she's standing and looking at me like, where ya been. She ate quite a bit and then got sleepy. But before sleeping she did this... See Video. Then settled in and ate some grit. You know what, I noticed the wry neck started and got worse when I gave her sand as I couldn't find the grit. I took that away right off as I thought that might make it even worse. I'm glad the other girl on here is doing better and the Roo too. Sorry, couldn't trim video as it was too long and not enough storage. I'll take another and post later. Anyway, she walked around in a circle, gaping, scratching her neck and crop and shaking her head. She does eat on her own but will not drink water. I've wormed her but still. All the fluid she's getting is from fruit. I dribbled a bit on her beak as she was sideways and she took a little. I'm glad I'm off work today because if she's only going to drink like this, it's going to take awhile. The things you learn is amazing and thanks for your reply. Much appreciated. Hopefully when can fix this and someone else finds the info useful.

My little wry neck chick who I thought for sure would not make a recovery is totally normal now. I did ALOT of head and neck holding and massaging to that biddy. Just put a movie on and massage my chicken's neck and hold it in correct position. Try explaining THAT to people when they ask you what you did for your Saturday night...

This friggin chicken! So this afternoon she is walking much better. Still swollen in between her toes, almost like bubbled up. But she still isn’t leaving the coop with the others. Just perches all day and night with her feathers all fluffed. I take her down twice a day and put her by the water so she will eat and and drink, which she does. So I picked her up this afternoon to take her to the water and her belly/thigh is all wet and stinky on the lame side. I tried to investigte the best I could but there was a lot of flapping. There is definitely a bald patch. So I think I will need to give her a bath. How in the world does one bathe a chicken? I will have the “assistance “ of a 4 year old and a 1 year old. We just got chickens a few months back and we are first time chicken owners. I really appreciate everyone’s help.

I bathe my silkie and back when I had a grown chicken with wry neck, I would bathe her also since she could not preen her feathers. They actually like it but they do duck their heads down so careful not to drown them. Just blow dry them which takes way longer than the actual bath.

Well, it's been weeks now without much change except she's a little more vocal. Still a lot of scratching if ear/head and crop. She acts like those fainting goats. If she gets a little nervous that I'm going to pick her up or something, she pretends, I think to pass out. I scratch her neck and tell her to stop it and then she looks up and talks. It's so weird whatever she has. She preens and eats pretty good but still doesn't drink much. I put selinium and Vit. E on spinach and she eats it so she's not deficient there. I've given her everything I can think of. This morning I warmed up some water and put honey in it. Don't ask why but I thought why not. She was in my lap and as soon as she saw I was going to give her something, her head went sideways and she closed her eyes. I stuck her beak into it and she drank a bit, then straightened out her head, opened her eyes and looked at me like, do you even know what you're doing?? Well, hell no. Then I said, well tell my WHATS wrong and then tell me what you need, it would be a lot easier smarty pants. Geez, then when I leave, she hollers, where ya going? we're not done here....
