Wry Neck or something else?

I would also include some vitamin B complex1/2 tablet crushed daily into food, or a little beef liver since wry neck can be from thiamine deficiency as well. But hers seems more hereditary or neurological. Some chickens just never get better, unfortunately.

Newcastle Disease
What is that ? And I've been giving her scrambled eggs with garlic and cyan pepper in it... She has been really rallying ! I thought she was much better but I went to put her in with the flock and the stupid roo I have pounced all over her ! :( I have 2 silky roos I got this winter one older one a teen... The teen... Is EXTREAMLY ahressive ! I hope he will settle in soon I put him bye him self and he's going bonkers !

I bathe my silkie and back when I had a grown chicken with wry neck, I would bathe her also since she could not preen her feathers. They actually like it but they do duck their heads down so careful not to drown them. Just blow dry them which takes way longer than the actual bath.
Lol I just got chickens last summer I have 6 Easter eggers and a few mix breeds and silkys ! I LOVE.... ALL MY CHICKS !
but most of all the Silkys ! And yes ! They like baths ! And crack me up how they just put up with being blow dryed ! They don't try to run or fly away through the process... But they do make some grumbly noises ! Lol

Well, it's been weeks now without much change except she's a little more vocal. Still a lot of scratching if ear/head and crop. She acts like those fainting goats. If she gets a little nervous that I'm going to pick her up or something, she pretends, I think to pass out. I scratch her neck and tell her to stop it and then she looks up and talks. It's so weird whatever she has. She preens and eats pretty good but still doesn't drink much. I put selinium and Vit. E on spinach and she eats it so she's not deficient there. I've given her everything I can think of. This morning I warmed up some water and put honey in it. Don't ask why but I thought why not. She was in my lap and as soon as she saw I was going to give her something, her head went sideways and she closed her eyes. I stuck her beak into it and she drank a bit, then straightened out her head, opened her eyes and looked at me like, do you even know what you're doing?? Well, hell no. Then I said, well tell my WHATS wrong and then tell me what you need, it would be a lot easier smarty pants. Geez, then when I leave, she hollers, where ya going? we're not done here....
One of my Silkies seems to have wry neck and is exhibiting the same motions you described. I had a vet look at her and Newcastles and Mereks were ruled out because she is not degrading in that fashion. She was placed on prednisone. It's been a week doing the suppliments and prednisone with no progress.
I'm wondering how your chickie is doing.
I'm holding out hope she will make it through this....

As I mentioned, I do not think she has Newcastles or Mereks. She is not declining. And she has had 2 less severe bouts of this in the past. She was able to recover in a week the first time and recovered overnight the second.

My experience of Marek's is that it acts like that in some cases. I've never had one survive more that 3 outbreaks, but some recover almost miraculously within a day or two, some I have nursed for months and improved enough to return to the flock, others decline and die or are euthanized.

It maybe wry neck caused by an injury. Make sure to do physical therapy. Hold her neck in correct position for long periods of time and massage her neck and also stretch her neck to just past what is comfortable. My wry neck chick no longer shows any signs of wry neck and Junebug's had some pretty violent and shocking wry neck symptoms.

I am curious what symptoms your Junebug had that you'd call "violent and shocking." My 4 week old Charlotte has what a lot of folks here on BYC say is likely wry neck. She had some episodes the first week I had her where she would scratch at her face, fall over and screech. Her neck would flop over. Based on advice I gave her polyvisol and vitamin E for a few days which seemed to knock out the problem. Then this past weekend she had more episodes and the scratching on her face (both sides) was so bad she drew blood. I had to take her from the brooder and she's been alone since then. I have been giving her E again (as well as eggs and polyvisol) and she has not had any further neck weakness or flopping and her scratching has gotten much less violent and severe, but she's still scratching frequently (we put bandaids on her nails to keep her from cutting herself). I am wondering if anything like this happened to Junebug? Someone suggested that wry neck can make a chicken feel like bees are buzzing in their heads, so that's why she scratched, but I cannot find any other wry neck stories like that.

My little wry neck chick who I thought for sure would not make a recovery is totally normal now. I did ALOT of head and neck holding and massaging to that biddy. Just put a movie on and massage my chicken's neck and hold it in correct position. Try explaining THAT to people when they ask you what you did for your Saturday night...

You're a good chicken mama!
