Wry neck...Treat or euthanize?? UPDATED with GREAT results!!

Louise's, my chicken passed away from wryneck. I gave her Vitamin E , and Selenium. It sometimes made her better. But it progressed and she got pneumonia, and passed. I know some survive and get better. I did all I could do to make her better, I was not going to kill her, I figure that's not my place to decide. So just keep treating her and pray !

I feel the same way. I just cant give up on my animals. As long as she still has a will to live I'm going to treat her as well as I can. She is being prayed for every day by many people. I just hate that she was getting better from the attack and now this ! I will continue to do my best, I feel like I owe her that even though this has ended up being alot of work. Very time consuming. It's nearly a habit now. Just waiting for some improvement since shes been having to be fed by a syringe every day. Also her crop has been wierd. I have been giving her water and soft liquid foods and her crop has been like a water balloon . And not completely empty in the morning. I'm not sure what to do about that either. I know shes been through trama and probably harder to digest since her neck is curled into her body. One morning her crop was empty and she has been pooping just not as much as normally.

Louise,
Do you give your young chickens #1 grit and Oyster shell, or crushed dried egg shells?
Even though she is sick, she still needs grit to process her food. I have been praying she will improve. I just put the it E and selenium in a baby medicine applicator. It looks like a
syringe. That was better than seeing if she got enough in her food. I fed Oatmeal, mashed corn, yogurt, and I put Save a chick in the water, you get it at the feed store. It is very inexpensive, I have it in all my waters all year long, it helps with hydration in heat and cold weather.

I gave that to my chick for 3 weeks, prior to increasing the vitamin E and selenium. I also used Save a Chick in the water. She still passed away about a month after she contracted Wry Neck. It was horrible, I never want to go through that again. I am glad it works for some chicks, I hope your baby is ok. Blessings to you....

I didnt realize that. I havent been giving her any grit or anything I feel terrible. This morning I noticed her crop like a tight balloon full of air about to pop. It scared me so immediately we went out side and I tipped her and massaged her crop till she burped and it was empty. Felt much better after she released some air. Of course then I started my research which lead me to thier need for grit. I have dried eggshells on hand so I opened her beak and with some water and food to help her take it down, I gave her 3 pinches of dried shells. Im not sure how much to give her each day. I'll probably give her at least a pinch with every feeding now. She is still on syringe feeding, we are going on the 4th week. Her head injuries are improving very nicley. The bottom half of the back of her neck has began peeling the scab of to reveal fresh new skin. The top is still pretty scabby. As for her wry issue, her neck has not gotten any better with the twisting, but she is looking alot more livley. She is pooping everyday. I am giving her poly-vi-sol in the am along with vit E and 1/4 of selenium pill mixed with her water. She also gets a few syringes full of yogurt and some food. Her food has been very healthy. I use my nutri bullet to puree everything. I then cook an egg to where its still a lil runny, also include Brussel sprouts, carrots, turmeric, raw honey, black pepper, coconut oil, raw garlic, raw acv, rooster booster, sunflower seeds, I believe thats it! I just want my lil girl to get better, I dont know if I'm over doing it but shes still alive here. Her 2nd feeding she gets more vit E and selenium mixed with water with some food and in evening more water and food. She is getting scrawny as well. I'm trying to feed her well so she wont lose more weight. Still this is all new to me, barley picked up my first chickens in Jan 17. I feel like a poultry vet nearly! Do you have any advice, should I hold back on some stuff?? Just not sure??

I'm so sorry about your baby, it's a horrible thing to watch them go through. I wish this didn't happen to my hen either, its heart breaking to see her go through this on top of a raccoon attack. It's definitelya learning experience and just praying for the best.

we currently have a chicken a leghorn rooster that has a twisted neck it it can eat okay and it can drink okay left with the general population it would die quickly we have him isolated when let a hen in with him every once in awhile. He had to get in fight with another rooster and damaged his comb I believe it caused some neuro damage causing the twisted neck I do not think he will ever recover maybe we should go ahead and eat him
