I had some baby chicks hatch out Saturday April 22nd. The last one actually hatched out on Sunday the 23rd. Her hatch took the longest and she came out the side of the shell. She is a Welsummer and nothing has been right for her.

On Monday, the 24th, when I got home from work I noticed her neck seemed a little crooked. I read about wry neck and started her on selenium and vitamin E. I have kept he separate from the others. I have not noticed any improvement and her neck has gotten slightly worse. She can eat and drink on her own. But it is weird because her feathers are not growing in, just long bristles lacking the normal plumage. I decided to stop the vitamin e and selenium for 24 hours to see if any changes occur. I did not notice any difference. I have been feeding her scrambled eggs and yogurt in addition to her crumbles.

My three questions are

1. How long before I see any improvement?
2. Why is she not feathering in?
3. Should I keep on with the Vitamin E and Selenium?

Thanks guys.

One pic is of her sleeping, but it shows the feathering nicely, the other pic shows her at her best...this usually lasts for a 20 to 45 seconds, then it's time for a rest again.

So she is more active than ever, and is about 3.5 weeks old with what appears to be a permanent crook in her neck. She is starting to feather in, though far behind her siblings. Ill try to attach a video.
She's been on chick vitamin e mixed with water plus a few drops of human vit e mixed in water. I've also been adding a few drops of poly visol to the water. I've been crushing 1/2 to a full pill of selenium and adding it to the food and water (.5 to full pill depending on time of day and amount eaten or drank since last time). Also, she is getting tumeric sprinkled on food, water, and bedding.
Most importantly, she was very inactive until we added a rubber duck. I've tried adding other chicks but she gets too stressed. She has actually bonded with the rubber duck and improved since its arrival.

okay here is a pic from earlier today, still not feathering right but better than it was...plus,
Hei Hei.PNG
like I said, she is way more active.

Also, Marie thanks for the links I have read both numerous times. I decided to start posting my Welsummer's state because I did not see where anyone else mentioned a delayed feathering issue. I continue to read both these sites and others for any new info, or just to make sure I am interpreting what I know correctly. I have decided that if this chick is not normal but wants to continue to live, and if the cat and two dogs can deal with it then worse case scenario this little girl (hopefully anyway) is getting diapers and living with me for ever more lol....way too much work to just give up if she never goes normal at this point! Not sure what to do if she turns out to be a he, but I have a strong suspicion she is a gal after all she is my 4th welsummer and her comb is pretty tiny yet!

Well, good luck!

Update: HeiHei (Born 04/23 wry neck spotted on 24th) still has a twisted neck, but she is big and strong. None-the-less her feathering is still not quite right. Outwardly she appears fully feathered, but when she spreads her wings she still has quite a bit of pin feathers that have not feathered out. She is very active but not at all coordinated. Full of life and very responsive to human interaction, but very anxious when around other chickens. One of my broodys pushed a baby chick out of her nest tonight. I have it in with Heihei. They are doing okay together as long as the baby doesn't go near HeiHei. I hope after a few days there might be a bond since HeiHei seems to tolerate the baby more than she has any of her siblings.
Her medicine regime has remained the same, Vitamin E in water (chicken supplement from feed store) plus a few drops of human vit e in water. I crush selenium and add it to the food or scrambled eggs 2X a week. I have also been adding a few drops of polyvisol to the water but have recently read that you should not mix poly with the Vit E/Selenium regime. Hopefully the removal of poly will make a difference.
