Wry neck?

When one of my hens was critically ill last year, my vet told me to make sure she got 100 ml of fluid every 24 hours. When I have to give water/fluid through an eyedropper, I try to get the liquid to go towards the her right side of her mouth b/c the windpipe is on her left, that could cause her to aspirate fluid if it goes down the left side. If I am holding her head, I tilt it so that the left side is up, and the water will drain down into the right side, where she can swallow it. Also I would gently rub her throat to encourage her to swallow. Good luck, it's not easy, but worth the effort.

Thank you. That will be very helpful. She has a slight case of wry neck and she tilts her head to the right. I hope she doesn’t have any fluid in her lungs. I’ll try getting her head to tilt the other way tomorrow morning.

I had one with wry neck recently and she would lay her head with her left side up, so that made it easier for me to give her water with the eyedropper. I would place the tip near the distal-back part of her beak and the water would drop in and go to her right side, where her esophagus is. But after 4-5 days, she was able to drink out of a little cup, if I held it up for her. Slow process, that wry neck recovery!

Mine like pedialyte. My silkie still has Wry Neck. I'm able to get polyvisol, vitamin E and selenium in a mixture a few times a day. She eats chick feed on her own but I do give her watered down food as well. I worry about giving her too much stuff. She is still on an anti inflammatory. She lifted her head 5 times today but not for very long. That's some progress. She's pretty spoiled from being carried around upright but that's ok. It's been 3 weeks since she started having Wry Neck. How much polyvisol do you give a 7-8oz chick?

So I gave her about 10 ml of water and 2 ml of ff. I didn’t water down the ff any more than it already was, so I think that was a pretty good amount. When I feel her crop, it feels more full than it has in the past few days, so that’s a good sign. That means I either got more into her, or she’s eaten more than I’ve given her. I think I’ve just gotten more into her though.

I did 4 drops twice daily of the polyvisol, she was 5 weeks old when she first presented the symptoms. She's a faverolle, so not a real big breed but I don't know how many ounces she weighed at that time. It was about 3 weeks of treatment/care before I noticed any real improvements in her ability to eat and drink on her own.

Sadly, Amelia passed away today. She was a sweet girl and she is going to be missed by me, and her feathered family. I don’t currently have the resources to get any testing done, but I am pretty sure the reason is mereks or genetics. I wish I could get testing done, but unfortunately that’s not currently an option.
