My daughter is 7 and wants to join 4H this year and raise chickens. We have about 20 laying hens currently, but to be honest they are all feed store babies. Great for their intended purpose only.

I watched her care for an injured chicken the past few weeks and cry her eyes out when she had to be culled. She helps me care for the girls daily and was spellbound when we hatched mixed eggs from the auction. I had to pry her form the incubator, lol.

I have up to $40 I can spend for hatching eggs, prefer no bantys, but other then that totally open for suggestions and pics! I will show her the choices and allow her to choose her "project". Would love someone knowledgeable about the breed she chooses who will perhaps be an email contact for her. Will supply pictures of our adventure from egg to shows next summer.

Any suggestions for her? Thanks in advance, I have been reading BYC for several years and have greatly appreciated all that we have learned from others knowledge.

Yes, hey, I see your from Shelton! Hi, neighbor!

Well well

We can work something out.

Eggs or chicks? We have some Ameraucanas due to hatch here in another 10 days. We can also do a deal on eggs if you are leaning that direction.

I do not know the whole 4H thing very well, so help me out, are you looking for breeds / varieties recognized by the APA?

We could do Ameraucanas, Araucanas (difficult), Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, or possibly some Marans?

Shoot me a PM

I knew BYC would be the place to ask, lol. I emailed the poultry club leader in my area and am waiting for a response but I do have a couple of questions...

Most importantly, is how to select an appropriate breed to raise. Should she raise a more common breed, more of a specialty breed, or does it really matter? The next question was what breed standards are recognized and judged by 4-H? Is there a poultry manual somewhere? Yes, it is for my daughter, but I am a research happy woman who likes to be prepared, lol. Thanks again for the help!

You will probably want a gentle breed for the first time, Cochin, silkie, even a D'Uccle. as for standard the use the APA or the ABA standard. your poultry leader should have a copy or the library. Most 4H's have a hand book to help you along.

Plus you have alot of help here and there are a few web sites to help you and try your local library some of the old books have better help than some of the new ones.

if possible get your birds ( you don't want to hatch eggs) from a local breeder in your area, the quality of the birds, alot better and most breeders will help kids in 4h, I know I do

First let me tell you how happy it makes me that your daughter is so interested in baby chicks and chicken care. You are so blessed and she is to have you. Below is our listing of eggs. I need to do a bit of updating on it but thought I'd sent it along as we full time farm and it will be fall before an update.

I would recommend our Speckled Sussex for her project. I'm particularly fond of the Speckled Sussex as they are such an affectionate breed and so colorful and beautiful as well. I would work you up a special price if you are interested as our daughter used to be a 4-H'er.

We have had wonderful feedback and take great care in packing and shipping of our eggs as we would like to have the same returned to us.

Please pm us on this board if you are interested. We just have no time for e mails.
Great success on your project and have a blessed day.

I have won the 4-H chicken show for the past 3 years with my birds. I really wish I could send you some of my eggs. But right now, most of them are young or not sperated.

If you still interested, I will have Mottled and Frizzle Cochins (Won), White Silkies, Blue/Splash Silkies Maybe, Light Brahma, EE (won) ready to sell eggs this fall.

Then BLRW, and some other breeds ready this spring.
