I'll sell them as quads for about $25 ea. They will be nearly mature and will be evenly divided by sex to at least give two pairs. If I have extra males, I'll just toss one in each quad.

I am currently selling my crates on mypetchicken.com. You will find them under "For The Show". They have to mark them up, plus there is a shipping charge from UPS or FedEx. They sell them for $85 plus shipping. Locally, I sell them for $69. I have them in stock. 304 728-6798

Hi there! I'm looking for opinions on Welsummer hens. I want to raise them for dual purpose, eggs and meat. I'm looking for a docile, friendly chicken that is seldom broody. Would this breed be a good fit? How many hens should one start out with?

To teamlj I haven't had any first hand experience with Welsummers, although they are beautiful birds. My favorite dual purpose bird that is very docile and friendly, is the New Hamshire. I don't know how big your family is, but you could start out with 3-4 pullets. This will give them time to settle into their new home, before they start laying. Good luck with whatever breed you choose.

I raise Wels. IMO they'd work, but not really great at either. They lay lovely eggs, but they are just a tad bit smaller and less frequent than some of my other breeds, and the carcass is smaller.

As for dual-purpose, if you're looking at heritage breeds, I think my Delawares and Barred Rocks both do better in that regard. The Dels grow faster and a bit larger, while my rocks seem to lay a bit more. Both are very close in each category so you can't go wrong with either.

If carcass appearance is an issue, the Dels white feathers win over the darker birds.

Number depends on how many eggs you want.

hth,
tom
