Loving all the information gathered on Backyard Chickens! I gathered information on coop venting before I built my coop by posing a question on another forum. So much to be learned here. I checked the max/min thermometers in my coop and run today after returning from a day trip. The overnight lows with all the vents open overnight between the coop and run were about 20 degrees higher than outside. The run has polycarbonate panels on the south and east sides. There are three vents between the coop and run that can be closed. Two up high and one down low. Also two vents to outside up high in the coop. Both those vents were closed off last night. It's going to be a real learning experience to find the right combinations that will keep the chickens happy and healthy. The coop is insulated and I do not want to use any heat.
Blooie, I've leaned bunches reading your posts.

Oh, my! Thanks. Can't take credit for the posts, though. Most of what I've learned I've also learned from others. There are a few things I've read and thought, "Nope, not doing that on a bet" but far more that times I've thought, "Doggone it, that make sense." That's kinda the criteria in almost anything - does it meet the common sense test?

One of the things that DOESN'T meet that test is ventilation. It goes so contrary to common sense not to button a coop up tighter than skin on sausage, but it's absolutely the worst thing you can do in winter. It's sort of like Mama Heating Pad....conventional wisdom says these delicate little critters need a heat lamp and an brooder for weeks and weeks. Common sense says Mama Broody Hen just goes about her business and the chicks dash under her for a quick warm-up, if they get spooked, or at night. Sometimes common sense wins!

In the end it's about picking through a wealth of experience and finding what will work best for YOU. You are there, we are not, and you know what you're comfortable with far better than we do!

How do you like Wyoming weather now. I went from -27°F at 7 AM on Friday (never got above zero on Friday) to 42°F at 5 AM this morning.

Well Bob, I'll have to say this for WY weather...at least it's not boring! I can't get over how much the lack of humidity makes on the temps. It's still "nice" out even when it's freezing cold temp-wise.

Now the wind, that's a whole other story, lol.

Wyoming is a lot warmer for the past few days.....our beloved granddaughter and her husband drove in from Sioux Falls, South Dakota to surprise us for Christmas. It was the most incredible moment I can remember, opening that door and seeing her standing there with her blinking Christmas shirt on and her beautiful smile!

Merry Christmas, my friends.....

Merry Christmas to you all!

It's snowing here in Carbon county, love having a white Christmas for the first time in several years

By the way...how do you refer to people from WY? I've been an Iowan, a Kansan and a Floridian...what am I now? A Wyomingite? A Wyomingian?
