Guard turkeys...who knew? (At least, I didn't never having raised turkeys.)

That 1" of snow predicted for today has come and gone and it's still snowing like crazy, can't hardly see the hill in the back yard.

It hasn't made it here yet. So far we have 1/8" with no snow falling at this time.

Turkeys can be very addictive and can be much more interesting than chickens. They also are the most efficient grasshopper catchers that I have ever seen.

When the snow was melting did you start seeing little tunnels at ground level in the remaining snow?

I don't recall seeing tunnels. What would that be?

The predictions said that we'd get it worse north of Lovell. We sure the heck are! It varies from big fat fluffy flakes to that fine stuff, but it's all been unrelenting and coming down heavy. Ken took a measuring stick out there and it said 11 inches, which was an hour and half ago. Oh, I know, it's not the "official" way to measure snowfall - for some reason that escapes me they use those little tubes. Like the snow only falls into the tubes. <sigh> But it's nasty nasty nasty out here right now.

Having worked at a place that had an official weather station, snow fall is measured on a flat surface with a measuring stick. The moisture level of it was measured by capturing it in a bucket with antifreeze, melting it and measuring the increase in volume.

Even for official rainfall, it is not measured in little tubes.

Well, shucks and darn! That makes a heck of a lot more sense than the way my dad explained it back in the day, and since it was Dad, I never questioned it. He said it, so therefore it simply "was". Never know where a pearl of knowledge is going to come from!! Thanks, R2!

The way the snow blows and drifts all over, my measurements would probably be 10", no wait 2", oops 5".

Mice and voles.

I'll have to keep an eye out for them next time the ground starts to become visible. I bet the mousers down at the golf course have seen them (those 3 little cats have gotten fat off all the mice and voles around there).

A new flock of peeps are coming to Wyoming at the middle of the month (2-17) from Ideal Hatchery in Texas. I picked several different breeds and will keep you posted.

32 pullets and 2 Roosters. I used to have a flock in TX and missed the fun, so here I am starting one in Wyoming.

How fun! Hope you'll share a photo with us.

Welcome to the WY thread (in case you haven't been here before)! My name is Debby, my husband and I moved here last year. I had to leave my flock back in FL so I understand what you mean about missing them.
