I'm sorry about the long post but I thought my experience last night was hilarious and I wanted to share.
We have seven cats and it just struck me how much alike my Chickens and Cats really are! Anyone who has a cat knows that the most interesting thing to a cat is a closed door (that's usually open) followed closely by anything new or something old in a new place.
Well, last night I went out to do a quick clean in my coop. I gathered up a big pile of weeds and grasses, a few tomatoes and a couple cukes and put the pile in the run to occupy the crew while I was cleaning. So, everyone runs out into the run to gobble the treats, I close their little door to the coop and turn around and there's one of my roos all by himself staring at me. He starts making this deep "chirping" sound and then the whole crew runs over and for the next half hour I have 34 chickens ignoring the treats and pecking at their door to get in!
So I finish the job and pop the door open and everyone piles in like a fire drill. They look around for like two seconds and all but one piles out the same way back to the treats. The coop door looked like one of those clown cars.
The hen that stayed in and was staring at the nest boxes (I have 8). She jumps up into the first one, scratches around for a second and slips into the next one, scratches around for a second then continues this same routine through all 8! About halfway through her inspection she starts chirping some sort of a "Calling All Hens, Calling All Hens" chirp and about 5-6 more come in and do the same thing!
Goofy chickens!
If curiosity killed the cat I bet there was a chicken close by to see it happen
