All right, so I have been producing fairly steadily some Coturnix quail, which are beneficial that they are considered 'non wild species', so they can be released any time of year. So, a hunting preserve contacts me through a dog training friend and wants to get some prices. He's set on me being the supplier, and is willing to pay for the quail.

So my question to the BYC Quail Forum Lurkers, how much is a fair price per bird? Considering the electricity(incubator)/electricity(brooder)/feed/supplies/eggs to begin with, what do you people think would be a good number to ask per bird?

I thought I read somewhere that since Coturnix were non-native immigrants they could not be released into North America.. Clarification, anyone? JJ you know the bird laws..

This is a private reserve, so they aren't technically being released, they are just being hunted. (Pleasant thought, I know.)

I don't know the logistics of it, but they checked it out beforehand.

We are planning on raising some bobwhites, too.

Oh well that's way cool! So, will they have to be pinioned? That would make them unable to fly though so it'd make hunting them shooting fish in a barrel..But as for price.. jeeze that's tough. I really don't know.

Well I think that depends on how many birds youre gonna sell. I know a guy here in california who raises Bobwhites and I believe he charges 4.50 a bird, but he sells a lot of them.

1. WRONG! THEY ARE A NON- NATIVE SPECES! IF THEY ARE PURPOSEFULLY LET OUT OF A CAGE THEY ARE BEING RELEASED. PRIVATE PRESERVES MUST STILL ABIDE BY BOTH STATE AND FEDERAL LAWS. THOSE NOT ABIDING BY THEM WILL GET( NOT IF--- WHEN! ) CAUGHT AND YOU AS THEIR SUPPLIER WILL BE IN IT UP TO YOUR EARLOBES!!! DO YOURSELF A FAVOR--- CALL YOUR STATE DNR/ FISH AND WILDLIFE/ WHATEVER THE GAME WARDENS ARE WITH IN YOUR STATE AND HEAR IT FOR YOURSELF FROM THE LICENCING AUTHORITY DIRECTLY (AS THESE WILL BE THE FOLKS ISSUEING YOUR CITATION OR TAKING YOU INTO CUSTODY...) DEPENDING ON YOUR STATE BOB WHITES MAY BE AN EVEN BIGGER NO-NO! AS BY RELEASING THEM YOU MAY BE SINGLEHANDEDLY RESPONSIBLE FOR WIPING OUT ALL QUAIL FOR 3 STATES IN ANY DIRECTION ONCE YOUR FARM RAISED BOBS RELEASE A DEADLY ILLNESS INTO THE WILD AND UN-IMMUNE POPULATION. NOT TO MENTION THAT FARMING BOBS FOR RELEASE - RESTOCKING IS A SPECIALTY AND NEEDS TO BE DONE THE CORRECT WAY OR THE RESULTS WILL BE A BUNCH OF TASTY SNACKS FOR YOUR LOCAL PREDATORS, AND NO QUAIL FOR THE HUNT.

THIS CAN EASILY BE "LEGAL THIN ICE!" JUST DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND CALL FOR YOURSELF. THERE ARE IDIOTS AROUND EVERY CORNER IN THIS WORLD.... AND ALL TOO OFTEN THEIR VILLAGE DOESNT CALL AHEAD TO WARN YOU ABOUT THEM AHEAD OF TIME! PENALTIES FOR THESE INFRACTIONS... BOTH STATE AND FEDERAL CAN COST YOU HARD- LABOR JAIL TIME TYPE FELONY CONVICTIONS, MAY COST THE IDIOTS THEIR LAND AND YOU YOUR FARM! AS WELL AS SEVERAL HUNDRED OTHER UNPLEASANTRIES. MUCH EASIER TO MAKE A CALL AND PLAY BY THE RULES ( AND I'M THE FIRST TO ADMIT THEY MAY BE KILL-JOY RULES, BUT IS IT WORTH IT?)

2. IF THIS IS LEGAL. DONT COUNT ON RETURN BUSINESS--- COTURNIX SUCK FOR HUNTING! I LOVE THE LIL GUYS BUT THE TRUTH IS THEY JUST SUCK FOR THIS PURPOSE.... AND ANYONE INTO HUNTING WILL SOON REALIZE THIS. EVEN FARM RAISED BOBS ARE A LIL DISAPPOINTING TO HUNT (COMING FROM AN AVID HUNTER AND DOG TRAINER)

Pheasants, chuckar and hungarian partridge are standard hunting preserve gamebirds and non of them are native.

I do agree with calling the DNR and checking. Different states have different laws.

pheasants, chukar, and hungarian partridge are resident natives--- these were introduced for sport hunting well over 100 yrs ago and have estabolished sucessful breeding numbers and are now native flauna in many states--- true, they were not native originally, but they are wild natural habitants as of modern day, and have been for over a century.
