Yardbird Chicken Plucker

I recently purchased a Yardbird and used it last weekend to do 5 CX and 3 EE cockerels. I was very happy with it. It saved me so much time. Well worth the cost for me since I do all the butchering start to finish myself.

I liked that I could take the drum and bottom off to clean it. I have a small plucker for my quail but it's a solid piece. It's hard to clean the feathers out of the bottom of that one.
I am still looking for the dirt cheap broken Chinese made pot quail plucker. I only need the tube with finger part and add the mod to the Yardbird.

Have anyone add a bucket inside the main one to make a quail plucker? I want to proceed this mod next year.

I've never heard of doing that and I can't wrap my head around how it would work. I just bought a small plucker for my quail.

In my experience, I built a chicken plucker using directions provided by the link below.

I like my whizbang plucker!

Here are a few thoughts:

Scald water temp 145f, then slosh for ten to fifteen seconds in soapy water.
If you have the scald too hot or too long you'll cook/damage/tear the skin. If the temp is too cold the plucker will be less effective. Mine takes about fifteen seconds to pluck three chickens. It is pretty fun to watch the popcorn action as the feathers get stripped away.

The plucker may work better with two or three birds in it at a time.

Ducks and geese are famous for the challenge of plucking.

If you get tired of your plucker don't junk it, there are many small producers like me that would buy it or rent it. I would be glad to answer other questions about the process. We are taking 150 hens through the winter and just finished "processing 150 young roosters.

This internet site has good directions and stories about a good product. Best Chicken Plucker machines

My amish neighbor bought one of these from a guy going through a divorce,he just brought it over and hooked it up (it is for now electric, but he will convert it to a gas powered motor) AMAZING,10 chicken in about 10 minutes!

The biggest issue is making sure you scald the chickens the proper length of time before tossing them in the tub.
