I went out to check for eggs, and my BO "Tweety" (kids named her) was in the coop. She wasn't in the nesting box, but hey, at least she was in the coop instead of under the apple tree. (maybe it was cooler for her by the door in this 106 degree weather) She was so kind as to let me watch. The really funny part is she sounds like someone's strangling a goose.

So after about 15 minutes, she popped out a nice egg. The first one yesterday was really oblong, but today's was nice and egg shaped. So I collected my egg, messed up her nest, and tonight I'll put shavings in a nesting box instead of hay, to see if that's what she prefers.

It takes 15 minutes to lay an egg??? No wonder she sounds like someone's strangling a goose.

Mine just started laying. I want to see her lay so so bad. I sat out there 30-45 min. I knew she was fixing to lay. she was so careful about her nest. picking just the right shavings and carefully arranging them. it was so cute. the other hens would come up and start scratching at her little nest she had made in a corner on the floor. so when everyone left i closed the door, and she started again with the nesting thing. well i had the horse pasture to scoop, and had to get to work (or i'd die of heat stroke). i bet 5 minutes later the little hefer laid her egg.

My chickens lay where they feel like it, sometimes in the box sometimes in the corner. It's an egg hunt just about every day.
