After several years of waiting for a coop to put them in, my son built one and we got chickens...10 little fluff balls. So far, so good, except for the neighbor's dog.
I read that once you start getting critters, you want more. It really is fun caring for them. Maybe someday I will have more...
We out of both necessity and choice look for how to do things as inexpensively as possible. Our chicken coop and run cost only the labor(of my son). Other costs, like the heat lamp, were more than I expected. However, the joy of caring for these little critters is immeasureable.
Following a year of many family deaths these little chickens have been a balm. Who knew?
We garden (some), we build, we fix, we live with contentment.
