Hi all! I’ve recently acquired a backyard flock of 18 hens. They are fed high quality layer feed grown locally as well as free access to pasture, some scratch morning and eve, oyster shells, and grit. I’ve been adding Apple cider vinegar to their water daily when I give them fresh. Today I caught the hen laying the egg, absolutely no shell at all, and she stood up and turned to eat it. She appears healthy otherwise. She lays shell-less eggs whenever she lays. I usually notice yolk all over the nesting box she’s been in and on the other eggs in the box. What can I do to help this chicken?! She’s a red sexlink, one year old.

Cut out the scratch and ACV...
....just layer feed, forage, and a separate feeder with the oyster shells.

How long have you had these birds and where did you get them?
Is it just the one bird what lays soft shelled eggs?
She may have had this problem at her old home.

It’s just her that lays no shells. These girls actually came with the house I bought! So I continued their routine, same Layer feed, separate oyster shell feeder, and grit. Thanks for the advice!
