Yearly shots for dogs with seizures

I have a Schipperke (M) 7 yrs old. I also have a 8 yr. Rescue (m) . My Schipperke Started his 1st seizure about 3yr old. They got really bad. He was having 3-5 each week and were very long (25 min.) The Vet gave him some Meds after several tests and did nothing! I also didn't like the side effects like Kidney & liver problems associated with the Meds. So, I started to do some testing on my own. I started with different kinds of water like distilled,drinking,ect. I found that Chicken in any form had a big reaction. I was giving cooked plain chicken with green peas & the seizures got worse. I now give him 70/30 fresh ground beef with fresh green peas. Even the 90/10 beef gave him some seizures every 15 days or so. Now its 45-60 days & their light & short. A specialist said to limit shots if any back then. I live in South Texas in the Boonies. I found a tick on him and am going to take him in for some tests . The last tests were 3 yrs ago with his last shots were 4 yrs. Now I think he is stable enough for at least a Rabies. I think additives and man made stuff does a lot of things that nobody will admit! Fresh Chicken? What could that be? The tests & Vet.said nothing when I asked about food allergies being the cause. I FOUND DIFFERENT!! The Meds were $100 + ea month. So I now use the $ on Fresh BEEF! I go to a place a few miles away that they have their own ranch & Butcher store for fresh Hamburg . Cutting out any chance of Preservatives. The VET STILL will NOT admit anything! They got a little PISSY when I told them I took him off of the Meds and was finding that different foods had effects on him. I guess they don't get the monthly dollars!!!

Seizures are not something I would go looking for advice for on a chicken forum, or any public forum for that matter.

You definitely need to talk to your vet, and follow their recommendations. They are the ones that went to college and have a REAL degree, not an "internet" degree.

I would also suggest that you look for a holistic vet, as you seem to want to pursue treating without prescriptions. Holistic vets are a great mixture and balance of Eastern and Western medicine, and might be able to help you.

Hello. I had a dog as a kid that had epilepsy. First seizure when he was about 6 months old. He was put on varying meds, and all helped. Last med was phenobarbital. Vet recommended Milk Thistle herb for helping his live stay healthy but I noticed he would have a seizure within a day or two of giving some to him. But the meds worked so that he had seizures much less often than off meds. Vet did scans on his liver when he was around 13 or so (he died at just over 16 years old)..... and his liver was healthy. They could see spots where it had been damaged but regenerated.....
I hope you find something that works well because epilepsy is hard. You may notice in the days leading up to a seizure your pup acting different, that's a clue one may be coming.

Food allergies can rarely cause CNS issues, as in siezures. However, there's no accurate 'test' for food allergies in dogs; it's about doing an elimination diet for three months to see if it matters to that individual. And then, if chicken is an issues, avoiding chicken and turkey in any form for the future. This includes treats, at least, because they may contain ingredients not on the label.
Meanwhile, consult with your veterinarian, or find another if needed.

Sounds like a different vet is needed.

I spent hundreds at one vet trying to deal with one of my dogs that constantly had skin problems. Finally got sick of it and took the dog to another vet, and instead of just prescribing meds to deal with the problem, he asked if we'd tried checking to see if he had food allergies. It had never occurred to me and the other vet office never mentioned it as a possibility. Turns out that the dog was wheat or gluten sensitive - a simple change of diet and one vet visit fixed the worst of his skin issues.
