Yellow Crusty / Mushy Skin UPDATED with pictures last post.

I am about an hour west of Tallahassee and it is an older silkie. Odd.
Very odd! It must have something to do with how a Silkie is feathered, I know when I first dipped these birds into the dawn dish soap that the crud as I've taken to calling it would't even let the feathers wet down we actually had to scrub into the crud to work the water and soap into it and onto the skin.

Makes me think we are dealing with the same problem just different stages of it. Please let me know how the Nystatin works if at all because if my vet won't let me get a script from her and it seems to work on the one your helping with I'll keep calling around until I find a vet that will help. My live stock vet is amazing though so she should help even though she does not do poultry at all.

She said that the first time she noticed it it was a huge ball on his foot and she pulled it off with no bleeding. It was yellow spongy underneath and smelt to high heaven. She decided to start putting monistat on it and soak it in epsoms and she works at getting it off but now it does bleed a tad. I will try to get up with her tomorrow and see if I can take the nystatin out to her and get a picture.

I recently had a bad case of scaly leg mite on a silkie I just obtained. It sounds so much like this but is confined only to the feet and leg area. I haven't smelled the feet. I doubt this is the same thing. But the yellow spongy things are the same on his legs. It will be a long time and many treatments before he is better.

I will post pictures later today.

Today's treatment will include a dose of Vit-a-Soy to each bird, a dip in flea/tick shampoo (in case it's bug related), followed by a rinse in acv, a towel dry off and spray down in antifungal spray.

I ordered the herbal rx for yeast infection in birds, figured it's worth a shot in the dark. I plan to add scrambled eggs once a day with their food, spray with antifungal daily and ever couple days we'll do a bath to get down under the crud. I'll also be keeping poultry drench in their waters daily.

I was also considering using Oxine AH on them and their coop to try to combat any reinfection as they hopefully start to improve, I was thinking I could spray down the coop / run every couple days.

Any other things anyone wants to suggest to help keep them "up" and boost their immune systems.

With that funky yeasty smell, I'd definitely go for the nystatin. I think if you can get the oral antifungals from your vet friend, that sounds like a great idea.

I was given three birds that are having a skin issue, and I'm looking for advice.

The birds were all healthy according to the former owner until recently like the last few days. All three birds have to some degree mild to very severe yellow crusty to mushy areas on the skin. The one bird that it is mild on is only on her feet and backs of legs .. the bird that is most severe is covering pretty much covering the whole body but there is no feather loss. I have the birds totally QT'd like so totally that they are across the road at a friends who no longer does poultry but has a coop still. Before putting them in the coop we bathed them really good using dawn dish soap I did not notice any bugs crawling off them during this but some of the yellow stuff came off the skin during the bath. I followed up the dawn with a thorough washing (with gloved hands) with anti fungal / anti bacteria shampoo, then they got rinsed really well and since it's warm out put into the coop.

I have Eprinex pour on and am considering putting that on them as well just in case it is mites and I didn't see them in the water due to all the other dirt that came off the birds.

The only other thing to note is the birds SMELL badly even after a bath the odor from them will make you gag if not in an open area.

We are bleaching all the towels we used to dry during the baths and have bleached the tubs out already, we wore gloves and changed clothes before coming into contact with any of our flock at home.

I put Poultry drench into their water and fed them after their baths, all three are acting like normal chickens none are lethargic or anything of that nature.

Thank you in advance for any and all input on this issue.

Beekissed has a thread where she talks about Nustock (which has pine tar and mineral oil and sulfur I believe in it) being antifungal. You might give it a looksee if interested. Have never tried it myself.

Thank you I did see BeeKissed thread and read it from start to current. What my birds have looks similar to what I saw when I searched gleet on the internet except that these birds are covered from head to toe with it. There is no feather loss at all and it just formed on the skin and base of all the feathers of the birds.

The good news after todays hands on of them, is the crud is already starting to shrink with the bath I gave them on Friday and the antifungal spray I'm using on them. I decided to forgo the bath tonight because by the time I could get to them it would of been getting dark by the time we were completely done with them. I didn't want them bathed that close to dark I wanted them to have time to sun dry but we had a ton of things to get done today (we are in the middle of packing to move).

The birds are alert , eating and smelled a little less today then previously. So I did spray them down really good with the antifungal spray I'm using and gave them vitamins, no pictures as I ended up doing it myself so no extra hands to work on them with.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to spray them down again and give vitamins, and I SHOULD be able to rope the hubby into helping me get pictures. I'm going to just keep spraying them for another couple days if it shrinks more I'll stay on this course if not then I will try to get oral meds and switch up my approach.

What is the antifungal spray you are using. It is going to be tomorrow before I can get out there.
