Good morning. Yesterday, my daughter and I spent nearly the entire day doing a thorough "Spring Cleaning" on the hens' coop and hen house. The girls were so happy when I finally let them back in the coop, so I used that opportunity to pick up each one & inspect them as they lined up at the door to be let back in. I try to do this periodically anyhow, but my lowest in the pecking order is extremely skittish and not always catchable. I have noticed recently that she has some yellowish-spots on her comb, so I was glad to be able to catch her this time and look a little closer. The spots appear dry and flat, and aren't oozing anything. Upon touching them, she doesn't seem to be in pain. Her wattles do not have spots, and her legs look fine. Her health otherwise seems normal (normal activity, eating, clear eyes and nose, no wheezing). I will note as well that she is beginning to molt. If it makes a difference, she was sold to me as a Welsummer (although when she does lay a period egg, it is not the typical dark brown but rather a tan with dark speckles on the bottom). None of my other 3 hens appear to have any spots like hers.

The other hens are not overly aggressive to her, but I have seen them peck at her on occasion - she has had her comb injured (minor) in the past from such pecking. I am a first time chicken owner, and my hens are about 17 months old (I purchased them when they were 1 week old). Appreciate any insight and advice you can share! Here is a pic of her comb taken yesterday. thanks! ~ Liz

Those could be old peck injuries in the healing stage, but you could also put some Monistat 7 (miconazole) or Lotrimin (clotrimazole) on them just in case it could be favus, a fungal disease. When my junior rooster keeps pecked by the senior one, he will have similar marks on him. Favus tends to look white and powdery.

Thank you! I really appreciate the feedback. My feeling is that she is healing from some pecking sores, but I will pick up one of the creams you suggested and treat her with that, just in case it is the fungal infection. Again - thanks so much.
