I got my chicken coop as a Christmas gift and got my (6) chickens a few days later. My Dad always had chickens while I was growing up. So, I thought I knew enough about chickens to get started. Well, now I'm finding that all I thought I knew just isn't enough. My Dad passed away in 2010, and my husband wants nothing to do with them (he was raised in the city), so I'm on my own. The first thing I've learned is "don't take your granddaughter (12 yrs old) with you to pick out chickens that you want for layers, 'cause she's got to have 2 out of the 6 hens to be "cute or pretty"." I've ended up with quite an assortment! In fact, I can't remember what the breeder called them but I know I have 2 Buff Orpingtons, maybe a Barred Rock ( might be a Dom), a really weird Polish something, maybe an Easter Egger, and finally a really strange (but cute) fuzzy footed one. I just wanted some EGGS! Anyway, I'm gonna have a LOT of questions and hope you guys can help.

I have raised my kid's and Grandkids using these little guys as teaching tools
and for doing chores like clean up and gathering the egg's oh and the feeding
it seems like a never ending lesion and they really do seam to enjoy all of it

Good luck with your flock

Just one of the Buff Orpingtons is laying. 1 a day (almost everyday). On the days she don't lay, I don't get breakfast the next morning :(. Grand kids are great! But I tend to indulge them a little too much! I'm going to try to get some pics on here soon. I really enjoyed seeing yours. I'm beginning to feel better just knowing there are others out there that enjoy this strange "addiction".:sick

Thanks for the pics Martha. What is the breed of the one that's small, totally black, with the fuzzy head? I have one, but it has a white head.
