Yes...another Ameracauna/EE post...Pleeeeeeeeeeese still look!!!

OK...I have been through all the Ameracauna/EE posts. (really...I have for weeks as the hens have grown...I wanted to wait until they were old enough to maybe tell)

I have two 17 week old hens that I cannot figure out. The most helpful post I found was one here:

I am positive they are not Araucanas...they are not rumpless. I think they are Easter Eggers BUT they do not have green legs. Their legs are slate...They are more gray than green.

I did find a hen that looks a lot like mine (except for exact color) on the Ameracauna.org site:

Can anyone tell what my hens are? I think the only thing that would keep these from being Ameracaunas would be the color. They have not started laying yet.

Any ideas?

editing to add: It does not matter to us what they are...they are beautiful hens...but I just want to know for myself (I am like this and am sure I drive people around me nuts

I think they're Easter Eggers. EE do not necessarily have green legs, although quite alot of them do.

They look like EE but they kinda look like russian orloffs in the face? You might just have to wait till they begin laying.

Cynthia- so green legs would be a definite sign of being an Easter Egger?...but not all Easter Eggers have green legs? Is that right?

Christina-you are so right about the Russian Orloff...I went on Feathersite.com and the neck is very similiar. I was thinking maybe mine was a cross between the Russian Orloff and an Ameracauna but they say that the R.O. is a poor layer of brown eggs.

I'd say if they had green legs, you're right, definite EEs. BUT, just because they do NOT have green eggs, does not necessarily mean they're Ameraucanas. It depends on their breeding, the stock they came from. Easter Eggers can have any color leg and lay any color egg. Ameraucanas must have slate legs and should lay an egg in the blue color family. Still, they're pretty birds. I had two EE/Barred Rock cross pullets who now live with rooster-red and they were a couple of the prettiest girls I've ever had here.

Definately not Ameraucana. Very pretty girls, but not a standard color so not an Ameraucana.

That strange fluffy head is a beard. EE's Ameraucana's, Orloff's, D'Anvers and dozens of other breeds sport beards, it's kind of like a curly tail on a dog, you'll find it in dozens of breeds, but it doesn't mean they're related.

It really does not matter to me what they are but I am so...uh...well..."picky" I guess (for lack of a better word)...Whether it is plants, food, chickens, etc....I just have to research and find out exactly what it is...it is the process and what I learn in that process that I love...not so much the end result...

I will post when they start laying but any further opinions are welcome in the meantime!!

I had searched a lot on the internet for photos of hens that looked like mine but could not find them. Your info above helps me a lot....I had seen examples of beards on other chickens but it seemed like the beard on mine just took up half its neck and it is just odd. (to me)

Easter Eggers really are MUTTS aren't they? And I guess that knowing the standards is the only way of knowing if you have an Ameracauna (well....that and knowing the exact parents?)

I agree they are likely EEs as well. Where did you get them? They have beautiful beards and are really pretty birds.
