My RIR's have just started to lay. I now keep them in the run all day because I'm not sure if they are all laying. How long will it take for them to get into the grove of laying in the nest box? I want to let them free range again but I have 6 acres I let them free range on and that's just a little to much to walk looking for eggs every day.

Mine have always been free range since they were too big for the hawks to carry off and they have always laid in the nest boxes...sometime they do silly things like find a bunch of hay in a pile near the barn and lay there. Right now I have 2 that are laying daily in my currently unused rabbit hutch. lol

Mine have been laying for almost a year and I still don't have an answer for that! lol I let mine out to use the attached run around 6:30am, then let them free range after 6:00 pm untill dusk, when I then lock the doors for the night. They have usually finished laying for the day by 6pm, so I don't have to do an egg hunt daily!
