Yet another snake post....

We have black rat snakes on our farm, and this has been in the back of my mind, since I started thinking about getting chickens. We are fine with the snakes, but I just have to be sure to provide secure housing for the chickens. I'll be keeping my new chicks indoors until they are 6 to 8 weeks old, then put them in secure outdoor housing.

These are some amazing snake pics, though. I will attest that the couple of rat snakes I have gotten close to have been very docile. I am also looking forward to them keeping the rodents out of my garden this spring/summer.

I've got 6 of those in my bedroom! What in the world did it swallow? lol. Great pics to the both of you, gorgeous snakes. Im glad to see so many people here on BYC who care enough not to kill them.

I can guarantee you it was not a snake that killed your rooster. There is no way a snake could have chewed it's head off. If they cant consume the whole animal, they'll spit it out and move on.

You probably wouldn't have liked another pic I had of a watersnake... Had it posted but decided to take it off due to people who are fanatical about snakes... lol

I love rat snakes! Looks like it just had it's first shed of the year, look at that shine!

I know!!! Isn't that just beautiful! She had a small piece of spider web or something on her face, though, and I kept trying to get it off. She warned me it just wasn't my business!!! LOL

Let me ask you, can you see any trace of a pattern on it's back? Many of the black rats up north are black with the small amount of white between the scales visible but as you go father south a faint pattern is usually visible even on adults like that one.

No, I couldn't see any pattern at all on her. I know this sounds silly, but I almost had fantasies she was really a Mexican Black Kingsnake! I don't believe we have them here, though, and I have no clue how to tell the difference. I don't think the kingsnakes get that large either.

Yeah . . . I was gonna say, there's just no way. I'd be on the lookout for the real culprit, if I were you.
