Yews, always a death sentence?

I'd either get rid of the Japanese yews, or fence them off securely. I have a couple of them in my yard, not available to the critters. The entire plant is toxic, including the roots. Dogs seem to avoid it, and the only puppy I saw who did eat some, vomited immediately and survived. You can look up info about it, and talk to your large animal veterinarian. Mary

I do plan on digging them all up and burning them.

I went and got it and gave them the dosage, i will continue today, i have fresh water and electrolytes on hand. And as soon as possible we plan on tearing up and burning all the yews, i knew they were poisionous but i had no idea how lethal they really are! We dont need them!

You may want to hold off on that. English yew is a threatened species. It is protected in its natural habitat. It also has medicinal uses. Except for the flesh of the berries, the entire plant is toxic to mammals. Birds can digest and neutralize the toxic compound. The leaves though are particularly toxic. As few as 50 have enough toxin in them to kill the average adult human. However, small amounts (2-3 ground leaves) are used in herbal medicine to treat chest pains.

My goats have ate it a few times now, everyime they get out they go straight for it for some reason, i do dose them with milk of magnesia, theyve never been sick. So idk. But i do feel like taking it out is going to be my only safe option of keeping them away from it! Lord knows one day i may not get so lucky, and i really dont want to loose one of my girls!
